The best information on self sufficient living has been in old books from before the time of so much of our technology. Google Books is a godsend for that sort of info.

Check this book and go to page 192 for some information on different types of old time incubators. There is probably a lot in other books, as well. This was just from a quick search.

Poultry breeding: a complete guide for keepers of poultry.

I love the hot water incubator concept!

Mulia 24 has massive powercuts and uses a wooden box and candles/oil lamps i think he said read gambling with the fate of my chickens or something to that affect hope it helps you:)

Yes, definitely check mulia's thread about "gambling"--someone posted a link to a kerosene incubator in that thread, and mulia's own experience may be helpful too.

I'm amazed at the things folk can do without electricity. We are so spoiled!

On the bottom of Page 2 of this thread (link below), there is a link to a pdf file about incubating.

I did not read the entire pdf file yet, although I intend to do so.

Begin at page 23 of the pdf file....and read a few pages. It shows an incubator heated by a kerosene lantern. It looks like a very viable incubator in my inexperienced mind. I expect that it would work very well with stable temperatures!

Here is the link to the BYC posting that contains the link to the pdf file with the kerosene lamp incubator detailed:

Perhaps this will help.

When it comes to dogs......I'm a HUGE Boxer fan! (nice dogs, smart, and ONLY BARK when it's important!) (GREAT with children, also...although all of my children are grown and on their own now.)

You could try to trade-in some poodles for a Boxer, but I don't think that poodles have much "trade-in value".....Ha-Ha!

My 4-H leader I had as a kid got a propane bators off of the amish people around his home town. I now have one of them and a propane brooder. But I have not used it yet.
