chickens pecking/eating own eggs...update pg.3

My chickens caught me off guard and started laying before I had nest boxes up. So they are eating some of the eggs. I'm going to try the golf balls and raising the boxes a little. As a last resort, I have seen recommendations to clip the beaks of the birds. Anyone have a thought about this? Is this cruel? I would certainly try the soap eggs first.

I've got the egg pecking thing going on. I only have 4 hens so it shouldn't be hard to figure out who it is. I feed them oyster shells and I put up a curtain. Just checked the boxes and I had 4 eggs, 2 were pecked. I just emptied the pecked ones out to fill them with soap. Will keep everyone posted...

I put 2 fake eggs in the coop that were filled with soap and sealed with candle wax. They layed 4 eggs, pecked one open and removed one of the fake eggs from the nest box and put it in the run! The other fake egg was unharmed and still in it's original nest box. So, I've made progress from yesterday. This may take a while, but they clearly DID NOT like the eggs with soap.

I put more bedding materials in the nest boxes and put both fake eggs back in. I also installed curtains over the doorways of the nest boxes made from an old feed bag. This method helped me keep them from roosting in the nest boxes the first time I had chickens so I'm giving this a shot as a distraction. Stay tuned.

Anyone know how chickens transport eggs? Do they put it on their mouth? The fake egg wasn't even cracked. Crazy...

Hi All,

I've just started having a problem with one of my 3 Wyandottes pecking her eggs. I have just introduced two new hybrids and I suspect there is a connection. I've narrowed it down to one of two and wondered if it was stress as we are still at the 'pecking stage' of inter gratin?

None of the Wyandottes ever lay in the nesting boxes, the used to lay in a veg planter outside whatever the weather! I tried everything from fake eggs to golf balls with no joy. I finally got them to lay in a shelter I have in their yard by putting an old wooden drawer with bedding in it. Ironically the hybrids lay where they should from day one.

Hi,

This is my first post here, and i have a barred rock hen that has laid her first three eggs, and ive noticed that all three have had the exact same hole in the exact same spot and im not sure what is causing this. I just checked the nest box, and there is nothing protruding that would cause a puncture. If it was in a different spot i might think it was her pecking at it but it is in the same spot each time. If anyone has any thoughts or advice it would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,
David

I have been having this problem the last three days as well, and mine all started up when a specific chicken started laying. Ironically, it's always her own eggs (I think). I keep finding two eggs a day on the coop floor, one from my bantam black silkie and one from her. I have had ceramic eggs in the nest boxes since they were two weeks old, but they haven't helped with those two as far as laying eggs on the floor. Will the egg - pecking stop, or should I get rid of the chicken I think is doing it?
