Dennis, so sorry. Chicks seem a bit harder.
Wing...Pickering has Midget Whites!! Or did you already order yours? We have some poults that hatched yesterday. MsLadyHawke gave us eggs she bought as 'Royal Palm', now that they're hatched...I don't think they are actually royal pals. Their down is not yellow.
LMP, the Beekeeping supplies we took to auction were plastic supers. We only used them to house feed as the bees weren't too fond of it.
So I had a very bizarre Broody mishap this morning. I saw a chick hanging off the back of the broody, hanging there limp. So I scooped her up and saw that a feather had wrapped around the chicks neck and killed him. Then he was stuck to her. Very odd. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself.
So sorry to hear you lost one of the chicks... I've been lucky to not have that particular thing happen yet... but I know it is a real risk, especially with feather footed breeds or even just chicken mama's who happen to be heavy on the leg or rump fluff. One lady I talk to actually trims her broodies legs now to prevent it since she lost one chick that way.
One of our 3 broodies who hatched today doesn't have that problem... though she has a serious moulting problem! She had a horrible spring moult, and hadn't feathered back in yet when she went broody. I only gave her 4 eggs because I figured she would hatch 2 or maybe 3 of them and wouldn't be stressed trying to take care of them... so of course she hatched all 4!
We will be watching her closely to make sure all is well and she covers them OK... seems ok so far.
Of course Mindy figured she would need some extra help... I went into the coop to check on things during a construction break today (I get suspicious when it is quiet) and I found Mindy had somehow managed to squeeze through the pop door into the broody hut?? she is 55 lbs and the door is like 8x10??? anyway... the 'hut' is about 3x3 and Mindy was curled up in there with Ilea and her chicks, smiling ear to ear... thank goodness that little hen was raised with Mindy hovering so she wasn't even freaked out by sharing a nest with her!. (now me?? I was freaked!)
