Yup, we've already gone through nearly half of our firewood! Come on spring!!!!!

Gonna fix some warm oatmeal for the chickies this morning. Patches still gets to stay in at night - she is one spoiled hen! She has totally healed up from a dog attack last month and looks just fine, but has tons of bare patches with no fluff or feathers, so she has no way to stay warm out there. We've got 10 Buckeye babies in the kitchen, too, but everybody else is out there in the frozen tundra. I haven't been out yet, but I hear roosters crowing, so I guess they aren't all frozen yet.

I am hearing y'all...I moved from Boston and this weather reminds me of exactly why. It was 16 out there at 6 am, not counting the wind chill factor! I am just waiting for a little more daylight before I go check everyone.

my computer says its 25 degrees here of course that is in town out here its probably lower supposed to go down to 17 tonight and it is windy too way to cold when all you have is 2 space heaters thank heavens for flannel sheets. I never thought I would say that lol

My garden is a frozen wasteland. I am so depressed. I had blooming water lillies last week. My pond has a sheet of ice on it and the lillies are mush. They are tropicals so I'm sure they're history. I brought in my 25 year old night blooming cerus plants and a few other valuable things, but I don't have room or sufficient vertebrae to bring in many. I thought last year's record cold was a fluke. Guess not. I pray the two heaters in my ccops don't burn out during the night without me knowing it.

I can't think of anything good to say about the cold except maybe it will kill off a few of the bugs. Bears have the right idea.....hibernate....sleep through this nasty weather and wake up when it's spring again. Who's with me on that?????

Does anyone in or near West Palm Beach have fertile chicken eggs? They can be any breed or even mixed breeds, standard size or bantams. In the Poultry Tent at the South Florida Fair there is an incubator where baby chicks are hatching every day of the Fair. It is a very popular exhibit. Our local poultry fanciers' club is in charge of running that tent, and we will begin setting the eggs on Dec 23, and set a dozen each day until Jan 8.

Would any of you be willing to donate eggs for this project? I don't know how much, if any, of a budget there is in the club funds to buy the eggs from you. If you have eggs, you can PM me and I'll put you in touch with the guy in charge of this. The chicks would become property of the club, who will probably sell them to fairgoers. It would be almost impossible to keep track of your eggs and the chicks that hatch from them in order to return them to you.

But it is a very popular attraction at the tent, and very educational for the visitors, most of whom have never seen a chick hatching. In past years I've supplied almost all the eggs for this, but my hens are getting old now and not laying as much any more. We prefer local eggs to avoid the high shipping rates, and to increase hatch rates.
