Yes, I, too was surprised at how virile an old, fat woman I am - to my hens!

That's a sexy pose, one they use if they are submitting to a rooster wishing to mate with them. It's called squatting.

I was thrilled when my first chicken squatted for me - it meant she'd be laying soon!

Now, when they squat for me, I just pat them or scritch gently at their shoulders and tell 'em what good girls they are. They stand back up and fluff their feathers afterwards.
 
I will tell you how smart chickens are.........whenever they squat when you get close to them, I have trained them to associate the word "SIT" with the squat. Therefore, whenever I want to pick one up, all I have to do is give them the command and obediently they sit. I don't think most people give them credit for their intelligence!

But truly, they are squatting to be submissive for the Rooster which is a natural reaction!
