Best Rooster for a mixed flock

So guys, looking for some thoughts\\suggestions:

I currently have a flock of Barred Rocks and Buff Orpington, all being serviced by a fine big BR roo called "Big Daddy" (he really earns his name). I am expanding my flock to include some Rhode Island Red (all hens), Easter Eggers (all hens), and Speckled Sussex (straight run).

So here come the question: In your option, should I keep the BR roo to produce the next generation of fluffy chirp balls or should I pick out one of the Sussex to fill his shoes?

I'm looking for good size and egg laying abilities out of my hybrids, however I would also really like some additional "flare"... In my reading it seems all Barred Rock roos produce barred chicks, which seems to be true for this years chicks. I currently have one BR\\BO cross hatched last weekend dubbed Bandit because he basically has a buff mask while the rest of him is pitch black. Cute, but still very dark.

Thoughts\\suggestions\\other breed I should concider?

I don't have any speckled sussex, but the breed index says they lay medium sized eggs. So if large eggs are a must for you, then I probably wouldn't use a sussex rooster.

What about an Buff Orpington rooster? Egg size is large. And if you breed it to your BR, you'll get black sex link chicks. (you can tell male from female at hatch - males have a white dot on their head, females do not) Also I've seen Orp/sussex crosses and they're very pretty.

Just my 2 cents, if Big Daddy is of good temperment and doing a good job with the girls, I would keep him and one cockeral from his offspring. That way, BD will rule and the youngster will be there to take up the slack with all those women. Good luck.......Pop

The two rooster idea really is the best, however during this winter the chickens spent a good amount of time inside the coop. This resulted in the beta rooster basically doing "hit and runs" on the hens to avoid Big Daddy's "disapproval" which was very quick to come. One hen came up lame due to this and the slowest hens have huge bald spots... One pot of chicken soup later, everything got better. So without making a rooster wing, I think two roosters are not a good option for this flock. I like the idea of the BO rooster, any thoughts on where someone could find one without picking up a bunch of straight run chicks? I keep a good eye on the local craigs list, however I haven't found many people in this area with an interest in BO.. Which is odd, everything I've experienced with the hens they are a great breed for small flocks.

But as far as roosters go, I'm a big fan of Big Daddy. He keeps the hens in line\\happy and he only challenges me for the Alpha spot once a month, he still hasn't found a good comeback for the reach I have in "Rooster boxing". Even if I replace him, he's only going to a new flock of his own no soups in his future.
