How to raise a rooster?

Looks like I will resist loving on him so much. Hard as it will be for me. Yay the sun is out after a nasty nasty rain weekend here in the Bluegrass state. I think I will let the kids out and sit with them for awhile. I still do not have flight netting on and have very curious cats

My rooster Gladys,.yes he wasn't supposed to be a rooster, was never touchy feely,..even when we thought he was a hen, he always kept his distance and we were fine with that,..I leave him be he leaves me be...and most everyone else,..except for my husband and oldest son. My husband tends to pick up the hens while the rooster is corraling his girls, the rooster would complain and my husband would laugh at him,..so now when my husband goes out the rooster stands tall throws out wings,..my son on the bottom looks like his father legs coming at him,...so the rooster does more of the same. I for one have never had an issue,..Gladys spends more time ignoring me sometimes seeing what i am up to in a non invasive way,..but never bothers me or my daughters or even my younger son,..so I have to agree with the "wild" one.

Based on my experience I think that a rooster's temperment is part nature & part nurture. A lot of what they become went into the eggshell with them. I think it's easier to make a gentle rooster aggressive, defensive & fearful, with rough handling than to calm an assertive tough-tempered one. I want all my chickens to know they can depend on me to treat them with kindness & consideration, to provide well for their needs, that I will not hurt them, that they need not be afraid of me. All the roosters I keep are mannerly, I will not put up with aggressive behavior from them.

Whimsy, perhaps you can continue to follow your good instincts with this little rooster, he may continue to be friendly towards you. Be alert to any signs of aggression from him, make sure he doesn't become demanding with hopping up on your lap but only comes when you want him to.

Sunny Side great advice...I have pretty good instincts with animals so I will watch him and treat him accordingly. I too want them to know they can depend on me.
