How long to feed chick starter?

My question is this... how do you keep your roos out of the layer feed?? Since they are not laying it can not be good for them....
The easiest thing is to feed an all flock feed that is low calcium and provide crushed oyster shell or similar large particle calcium in a separate container. The roosters will eat little or none of it.

You can put a low protein/low calcium feed in a feeder that is elevated so hens can't reach it. Then put the layer feed in a feeder with openings too small for the rooster to get his head into.

You can isolate roosters in a bachelor pad and give them weekly conjugal visits.

Soon to get my 6 chicks this is so informative. Trying to gather all the information and be ready. Thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge with us.

Not everyone has access to all of these types of feed. Each feed store carries 1, 2 or 3 lines of feed.
The instructions are on every bag of feed. Each manufacturer makes several feeds for various types and ages of birds.
Almost all bags have a chart on the back of the bag with when to feed what. Go to the feed store and read the back of a bag and you'll see what I mean.
Also, there is an ingredient and guaranteed analysis tag on the bottom of the bag. It also has feeding instructions for that specific feed.

Do I have to switch from starter to grower with laying hens ? Or is starter okay until laying ???
No. Starter or all flock/flock raiser is fine for their whole life provided you offer oyster shell on the side for those that need the extra calcium. If you are intent on using layer feed, the starter will be fine until they lay.
