I was going to show three chickens this year for FFA. I ordered two polish and a mille fleur. I ordered my chicks with my school. All together my school ordered 44 chicks. When the chicks finally arrived from the hatchery, some were dead and in the next week 20 had died. So their were only 24 left. I didn't know if mine were dead or not because my two teachers didn't know which breeds of chicks were which so we were going to wait to see what they turned out to be once they got thier feathers. Well, about a week ago someone jumped the fence and went into the school's greenhouse (where the chicks were) and turned the garden hose on full blast. It flooded the green house and drowned all but four chicks. I don't know how the four chicks survived, but they did. So I am not getting chicks to show this year.

I know from experience that some of the top hats are difficult to raise. I purchased 50 last year and only have 3. I would wait until it get quite a bit warmer out, and then feed them only chick starter. I would keep them seperate from everyone else. All I want is some top hats, and I am not sure if it is worth the risk for me anymore. The few I do have are bantams and are silver and black crested polish.

Hope you have better success later.

Sorry about that, I sure hope that trouble maker gets caught as tresspassing and vandalism is a crime. They better clean up the green house up and replaces the chicks too.

Some areas carry hefty sentences for vandalism like that. Although it is a green house, it is still property of the school and water damage is no fun, and in this case, ended the lives of chicks.
