Fertility is a weird thing. I have two roos running with four hens right now, and a bunch of eggs at about day 14. After candling, several eggs from the same hen candled clear. But she has several that are developing as well. All of the eggs from all the other 3 hens are developing. Why just hers, and why just a few?
They say that a rooster's sperm "packet" contains live sperm for up to a month inside the hen, so Degas could just have a low sperm count, or lots of nonviable sperm, and one eventually made it to an egg before one of Rudy's. How long was Degas out of the picture before the egg was laid/hatched?
What kind of rooster is Rudy? Araucana too? Sometimes they have such tiny tufts you can't even see them, though they carry the gene for tufting and can produce tufted offspring.
