Chicken (Poultry) Addiction Anonymous *Chat Thread*

Went to buy feed and TSC has 75 cent chicks. Buff orpingtons and assorted midget chickens (bantams)
Ok 4 midgets and 2 buff orpingtons. Tally is only 59 birds now. Been eyeballing the incubators. Been reading how challenging hatching can be. Lol like I ever avoided anything tough. Got out my chicken cookbook and perused the gourmet recipes. If the description on how to get to your house includes look for the barn red coop. You might be a chicken addict...

My name is BirdieBirdie and I am a chicken-aholic. I resisted the thought of chicken even though my hubby wanted them badly. Gave in two years ago and the kids got 7 fluffy chicks. Within a week, I was hooked. 5 months later I got batch 2. Then batch 3 in Sept of last year because I had to replace the ones I lost. Nevermind that I came home with 7 to replace 2...

Then I hatched a few... and it's gone out of control. I now have a flock of 40 and yet I Google and troll websites for picture of ladies and cocks. Thank goodness for chicken math because I can honestly say I am sticking to my original figure of 7.

Hi my name is lilwildrabbit and I'm Addicted! It started last year. My sister wanted chicks for christmas because she had two birds given to her after years of not having any( we were raised up on a farm) well being the little brother I ordered her some and decided then I would like fresh eggs also after looking at the prices in the store for the jumbo brown eggs that I like but over the years s noticed they weren't as rich in taste as they were when I was little so I ordered me 15 hens also.
Well me not turning down a great bargain while I was at tractor supply getting the starter food and supplies I needed for my new chicks I noticed they had put away the tanks for the chicks they sold the day or so before when I was in last time but next to the cash register they had two boxes of chicks. So I ask the dumb question as to what the problem was with the chicks in the box well she said we wernt supposed to get another shipment but for some reason we did after taking the display down. There was about 60-70 chicks in the two boxes so I debated and like I always do I throw out a number and see if they go for it and I was suprised because I put out a crazy price for the box of large breed chicks I said I'll take them all for 30 dollars. Next thing I know she had called the manager and they said ok! I'm looking by this time a little shocked because there is at least 40 -50 chicks there! Well she started to get every thing straight asvto how to put this in the register she ask me if I wanted the bantams as well I said I'd give 10 more for them she looked at me and smiled, I'm thinking by this time what the heck can I say to my wife! I'm in the dog house for years!
So as she is as ringing them up I'm ask by a guy and his wife ( he was in the military ) holding on to a little boy they ask the lady if the chicks were for sale she said no that I was buying them. He ask me if he could buy one for them I said no not for sale to military but you can pick out 4 or 5 for you to have for free. So as God gets his share of the bounti I harvest. Well it turns out that my wife just looked at me and said well we will have eggs for the neibours too! So from about 80 chicks I had managed to get about 60 to good pullet size and was attacked by some dogs that killed about 15 and again about a month later but overall I still had 40 birds and only 5 were Roos so I started getting eggs and like a good neibours I shared them with a few families around here. No charge! I was happy but then this January I was hot hard by dogs just st after giving all my fresh eggs away the day before. I was down to 10 hens only two Roos both bantams. Half of my birds were injured that were alive still . Dead chickens everywhere in the pen and only one bird that escaped distruction my one Dutch bantam hen ( my baby) was in total dismay almost totally depressed because I'm on a fixed income and couldn't replace that many laying birds my one true sitting hen was dead along with all but one chick she had. I was at a loss so I looked at what I could afford as to get my flock back in the black! Well got a good deal on a 96 egg incubator about 65 dollars new! (Now they are 185 for one) no chance of getting new eggs just some old ones I had some from the fridge and some that were in the nest boxes that morning of the attack. I got everything started going and was looking for some info as to how exactly to get it all going when I came across this site ( a blessing) I was happy with my first hatch of 14 chicks!! I'm now on my second hatch of 25 to start 19 after candling. I have already ordered 2 dozen more eggs from ChickADeeHatch I met here gathering some more of my eggs when I get the eggs from him and trying to see when they hatch then what am I going to hatch next time! Even have ideas I'm putting to paper to build my own incubator/hatchet/ brooder lol I'm Addicted and just can't help myself!!
