Hedemora Thread

Why do you recommend hatching eggs only?Just curious. Greenfire's chicks are all vaccinated for Marek's and if you hatch them yourself you would have to vaccinate them yourself.

Eggs are less apt to be infected then bringing in living stock, but, if they are vaccinated then you are much safer.

I have been following this thread since it started, and watching the breed, I am very interested in cold hardy chickens which is why I am focusing on the breeds that I am, I hope the Hedemora gets over this road bump of susceptability to diseases that are endemic to North America.

As of right now I think the best position is to vaccinate all your chickens if you are keeping any Hedemoras with them, and of course it will protect your other birds also. Just my two cents.

I have three! I believe a trio - two hens and a roo. They're about six weeks old, and are starting to really develop their extra fluffy feather coats. I'm excited to see how they develop.

Hi everyone!
can any of you tell me where you are getting your Hedemoras from? I am in northern WI and desperately looking for a way to acquire some pullets, adults, or? by spring. I just have room for a couple girls (and maybe a fella?). Anyone have any ideas? I know about Greenfire but so far they will only sell day olds. I have been watching the auction, but no Hedemoras have shown up in a while.

Also, please post more pics!!! I love seeing all the varieties of this amazing breed!!!

You folks on the east coast stay safe! Looks like you might have a big blow heading your way!

Mine are from Greenfire - someone else had purchased a larger batch, then sold a few once he j we what he wanted to keep. I know he will be offering hatching eggs in the spring, but don't know if he'll ship or not.

I know Greenfire has in the past offered started birds of different breeds, so I would call him and talk to him, shipping just 3 chicks wouldnt work, so call and talk to them.

If you ordered more then you need I am sure you could find someone in the 3 state area who would want some.

Hello everyone!!
I have 2 hedemora cockerels for sale. Will be willing to ship to get these guys good homes. They look just like the pictures at greenfire farms. I got them directly from greenfire as baby chicks. I have an add I just posted of what they look like in the 8 weeks and older section. There good boys and they will be gorgeous!!

Long time since i've been here! I got my first eggs from my Hedemora's this week!

It seems they needed some REAL winter to start laying eggs, the temperature dropped to below -20C and i don't have any extra heat in the hen house. Well, my little flock sure lived up to their reputation as a hardy breed; they didn't seem to mind the cold at all and all i had to do was give them fresh water a couple of times a day - even though they don't mind eating snow they need to be able to drink properly in order to eat enough to stay warm. Now when it's just around -7 the temperature in the hen house seems to stay above zero though.

I'll make sure to take some new pics!

-20 C is a great endorsement for their hardiness, very impressive, are they free ranging?

I have been watching here and hoping to see more pics of them, I think that I will have to get a starter flock of them !

I am really interested in how they do here in the northern and especially mountain states!

Happy New Years all, enjoy, be well.

Jake
