Honey Bees & chickens??????

Quote:
Hi I am Brian using Lesa's membership. I don't think I ever heard such a thing, not liking honey. We are on our second season with one hive that gave us 39 pounds this year. Boy, home grown is nothing like store bought, I can tell you that.

Our hive is right in the chicken yard and I have yet to see a chicken eat a bee. Chickens are like heat seeking missiles when it comes to most bugs, but bees are left alone and I don't think it is because of the stinger. Although, I don't know what it is.

We extracted the honey this year by warming it up and just letting it drip which took a long time. So I got to work in the basement building an extractor using a ceiling fan and a 55gal drum for next year. Commercial extractor are way too expensive for my taste.

We have yet to get stung but I am sure the time will come. Although we don't mess with ours. Nature decided what bees should do and we just let them do it.

I think mostly because of fear bees would be a liability in urban areas. This world is just too sue happy nowdays.

Wandering if anyone keeps honey bees & cickens? I am thinking and doing my research on honey bees. Would like to get some in spring. the place I want to place the hives is about 30-40' from the back corner of our run. The bees will travel in all direction. Only thing I am worried about is the birds trying to catch them and getting stung in the throat. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

We have three hives and chickens. They do fine.

I've been wanting to get into beekeeping too.... I've been doing a lot of reading...my dad has a box in his garden, the guy who works the hive said he'd help me get started... Now if I can only convince my DH , chickens we're pushing it... Lol .. I'm thinking I want to start out with a Lang 8 bar box... Anybody use one of those? I know most people use 10.....

We currently have 20 hives. All are Langstroths ~ 11 are 10 frame deep brood boxes and 9 are 8 frame deep brood boxes. We use medium supers. I have seen no difference in the production between the 2 sizes.

If I were just starting out I would use 8 frame medium boxes for everything. That makes all of the boxes interchangable and the filled boxes are much lighter. In my area you would use 3 medium boxes to overwinter instead of 2 deeps.

Thank you!! I was thinking the 8 bc of weight.... Are the 8 a lot easier than the 10 as far as lifting?

Joined the local Beekeeper's Association and we are putting bees in the backyard with the girls. Glad to have found this thread to answer some questions. Chickens and bees are a good pairing from all I gather and I like the fact that they both go to bed at night and really don't require a lot of work to maintain. Honey, eggs, and veggies from the backyard, now all we need are a couple of fruit trees to be better urban farmers.
