How do you keep eagles away?

I live less than 5 miles from the Missouri River and probably 10 miles from where the Missouri and Mississippi meet so bald eagles are not that uncommon a sight in the winter as they migrate down the rivers to open water to obtain their favorite food...fish.
Well a couple of years ago it was mid winter and a relatively nice day so I went out and let the hens out to have a bit of free "range" time. I was just hanging out when all of the sudden the hens took off for cover like customers when the doors opening at Wal Mart on black Friday. At first I'm doing the what, what, looking up, looking over here, looking over there, what, what!!!!!! Then it was like vision of the great one, just appeared, there he was sitting on my chain link fence and honestly I wanted to run for cover as well.
I just stood there and we check each other out for a couple minutes and he took off. I never saw one before that around my place and have never seen one since.
Another funny memory from that experience was my old Speckled Sussex, Spot, she was at least 8 at the time. I actually seen her get "air born" that day, albeit a very short distance but none the less OFF THE GROUND. I think it surprised her too. Spot is still with us by the way. Still moving slow but she still goes.

That is the funniest story ever! Just your choice and placement of words.

I'm surprised this is not a popular topic. I guess I just lucked out to live in the Migration path of Golden (Mexican) Eagles. My free range flock has been attacked twice. The first attack I lost a 3 month old Orphington. These guys hunt in packs like wolves.
The Cd's hanging from the trees did not work. I ended up moving my coop closer which offers more people movement as well as more coverage.

My eagle season starts in the late fall. With all the seabirds and a big park near by, I'm in a prime location.

I have personally seen an Eagle bring down a small brindle hound and eat it! You could string up 80 lb test fishing line every 20 feet or so for the Crows.

Well here on the West Coast of BC Bald Eagles are a very real threat to chickens. We are the “winter home” of the bald Eagle so we have lots of them. I have lost 3 chickens to them this year that I know are from Bald Eagles. 2 earlier in the year and one 3 days ago and that Eagle is still hanging about hoping for another meal. Last night I saw my Black Copper Marans hen DJ running as fast as her fat fluffy butt would allow trying to evade one while I ran my fat butt across the yard shouting. They can’t carry them off well at all but will grab and eat them 5’ from the coop.

Circled in yellow is the eagle next to my coop.

(Btw- I lost the two birds earlier this year when they escaped their run at my old place by the river and the 3rd this week that was the first since moving them close to my house more in town. I hadn’t had a problem here at home yet. I guess that will be the end of free ranging them here)

I am so sick of them chasing my lambs! One lamb was snatched just after it came out of the ewe! This is not right! My lambs are my main income.

:welcome :frow What some people here I know do is when they know their sheep or goats are about to give birth they are put in a stall for birthing otherwise the coyotes or eagles will get them and occasionally a hungry vulture. Good luck...
