The American Hollands Chicken Fanciers

In 1934, progeny from previous matings of fowls imported from Holland crossed with White Leghorns, Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshires and Lamonas were selected for desired charastics, resulting in the breed known as the White Hollands.

During the same period, selected matings of the progeny from White Leghorns, Barred Plymouth Rocks, Australorps and Brown Leghorns were bred to produce a fowl with the same characteristics with a barred feather pattern, thus the Barred Hollands were originated.

Both varieties of Hollands were admitted to the American Standard of Perfection in 1949

ECONOMIC QUALITIES: A heavy general purpose fowl for meat and eggs. Skin yellow; egg shells, white.

STANDRD WEIGHTS:
Male:.........8 1/2 lbs. Hen........6 1/2 lbs.
Cockerel:.....7 1/2 lbs. Pullet.....5 1/2 lbs.

From the American Poultry Association's American Standard of Perfection.

The American Livestock Breeds Conservancy considers the Holland to be critically endangered. It is believed that the White Holland is extinct. Only one flock of over 100 breeding hens is known to exist:(Ideal Poultry Farms, Texas). The largest known privately owned flock is Mosquito Beach Poultry (Arkansas). We are attempting to do a census of Hollands. Please join us on this thread and post how many Holland Breeders you own.

This breed is in need of assistance . Most are well under the Standard weight and few actually lay a white egg.

Thank you for undertaking this important project. I was interested in adding hollands to my flock for the white eggs but with out the leghorn personality. (I like an easy going quiet sort of bird. ) I sincerely hope that it is NOT extinct!

The American Livestock breed conservancy has 3 great pdf articles providing great detail on the recovery of the buckeye and the methods of selection that can be applied to all poultry. There maybe other methods, too. If there are not a lot of birds, does just increasing the numbers become the primary goals, then apply a stronger selection %.

Thank you for bringing this situation to our attention!

Hatching inferior birds is not the answer. We can hatch hundreds of Hollands, but if they are two pounds under weight and of poor type, are they really Hollands? A friend is working on an improvement, similar to teh Buckeye improvement. She has had Buckeyes with some success for awhile and decided to start a Barred Holland project. the photo in post #1 is hers. She has/is aquired some of the foundation breeds of teh Barred Holland. All are of top quality in their breed.

Today she placed Reserve American Class at the Big Bird Classic, Pine Bluff, Arkansas with a Barred Plymouth Rock. She has been researching for some time on how to restore the Barred Hollands. She has consulted with top judges and breeders to learn what she can.

I would suggest to anyone wanting to help the Barred Holland to acquire soem hatchery stock to get started with. Then when Mosquito Beach has theirs improved, they acquire soem breeding stock from her to improve theirs. Something like was done with the Buckeye. In my opinion, she should have some quality Standard bred Barred Hollands in 2 years.

Congrats to your friend! I wonder, will she be using that Barred Rock in the upgrading program of the barred Holland. Sounds like that may be a good direction: to infuse good blood from some of the original parent stock. I wonder if she will Blog this journey--it would be very interesting to those who love breeding.

Yes, she is planning on using that Barred Plymouth Rock in the Barred Holland Improvement Project. She also acquired the Reserve Breed Australorp, a male, to use in the project. She should be joining us on this thread soon. She thinks it may take 10 years to get both type and white eggs nailed down. I am thinking a bit sooner. But she is definitely started down the right path.

The judge that place the birds yesterday was Pat Malone, our APA District Director.

One of my friend's Barred Hollands males placed Best of Breed at Eldorado Arkansas last week. The judge said it was an excellent Barred Hollands. He has judged for over 50 years and has seen the Barred Hollands in its hayday!

I LOVE my girl from Ideal. If I could find others of her temperament, I would be so thrilled. She is sweet as can be, and doesn't even fight back when others pick on her. A great chicken, I recommend the breed to everyone I meet!

I am so excited to see someone working on the breed. There are so many great breeds that have been neglected that I would just die to work with... if only I had the time, space, and money to do it.

Heard that the ALBC are planning on a Barred Hollands improvement project similar to the Buckeye and the current Java project. If anyone raises Barred Hollands please contact the ALBC. If you have White Hollands please contact them as soon as possible! It is believed that the White Holland is extinct. Contact the ALBC at http://www.albc-usa.org/
