Hi,

We are getting our coop ready and want to keep odor down. I saw on another thread that people suggested using sweet pdz or drystall for odor control. It looks like our agway carries both, any opinions on which to use? Also, we are new to this do I just sprinkle it under/over pine shavings? There are probably instructions on the bag and will take a look. Any suggestions/opinions appreciated! Thanks!

I like Sweet PDZ better. It seems to work better at drying up things and cutting that ammonia smell. I use it after a rain storm to dry things up a bit. Also, whenever I change the shavings, I will sprinkle it on the bare ground along with DE and then put fresh shavings on top. Then once every couple of weeks I rake the shavings around to stir them. If the shavings are damp I will sprinkle more Sweet PDZ and DE on top of the shavings and let the chickens mix it in. I only use it when it's damp or rainy, though, otherwise I find I don't really need it - just a good stirring of the shavings is usually enough.

It's a dry sprinkle used to absorb moisture and smell, helps keep the ammonia in check. I got mine at TSC. I use it in the house and am happy with the results. I sift the shavings in the house several times a week and sprinkle Sweet PDZ once a week. I sprinkle it below the roosts to dry the poop.

I think they are pretty much the same product just different name brands? DE works for this too.

I use PDZ in my horse stalls. It's good for odor but not so much for moisture. I mix DE with it and have a much better product. So far, I've only used DE in the coop, partly because that's all it seems to need but also because I don't feel like hefting PDZ from the barn to the coop!
