Sorry to read about your dog Tuck. Best wishes for him.
Lost another pullet to a coyote 2 days ago despite my best efforts. Was thinking today might be the day I catch up to him because the dogs had been skirmishing with the pack most of the night. It being a cloudy day, seemed the yotes might be out moving.
A week ago, I cut brush just 50 feet from my front door so I could see the coyotes that had hidden there in the past. I let my chickens out early this morning and all seemed quiet until I heard Emmy Roo, the golden colored dog bail off the front porch. I jumped up and opened the door to see her heading toward the brush, her hair was standing erect as she emitted a low growl. I thought to myself, this is it, he is coming. In just a second I saw the ghostly figure of the coyote moving from left to right just outside the edge of the brush I had thinned. Many times I had seen him before, always for only a long second or two as he managed to disappear into the thick vegetation. A couple times I had come close to shooting him but feared for my dogs in his proximity. Today though was different. Brandy was in the house napping so I only had to watch for Emmy Roo. As he moved to my right, he cleared Emmy Roo and instantly it was over.
My hope is the remainder of the pack will not be so bold and will keep their distance from my dogs and yard. My dog Brandy has been injured twice over the years, both times they split her tail open during a skirmish and I had to stitch the wound. Even now, my hope is the pack will continue to den here. I would miss their howls at dusk and the bark of their pups in the summer and without them, the rodents would simply over run us.
Here's a pic of my dogs and the coyote. http://tinypic.com/r/mb4zzk/9
