The thunderstorms this week have put a damper (no pun intended) on getting started on the build. I haven't even thought of a name for the coop, but there are plenty of good ideas on here. Where I live there are predators everywhere. Does anyone have a suggestion on how far away to place the coop from the house. I have 3 acres, 1.5 wooded, and 1 neighbor. thx

If you don't have roosters, or don't mind hearing them, I'd say put the coop as close as you can stand. I'll bet you'll have problems with predators on 3 acres in MD, so it would be good if you can immediately hear any unusual fuss when it happens.
 
We are naming ours "The Doo Drop Inn". a nod to a Charlie Daniel's song about a place in Jackson Ms,b/c I'm from MS.lol. It was DH's idea. I wanted to paint "SEE ROCK CITY" on the top too,but it will be covered with tree's. An alernative name will be "THE SWAMP!"
