Prolaps

I have never dealt with prolapse in hens, yet. However I found this link to another poultry site that someone has the same issue with their hen. Read the answer to how it is caused and how to treat it. It is very informative and should help you out with your hen. I am sorry you have a hen with this trouble.

Hi, I have researched various sites which provide treatment procedures for chicken suffering from a prolaps. They mention to gently push the prolaps back and use preparation H cream in order to reduce the swelling. Unfortunately, I can't locate a seller of Preparation H for chicken. Is there anybody who can tell me if I can use any Preparation H cream to treat my chicken. I would really appreciate a quick reply so that I can purchase the cream a.s.a.p.

Hi TwoCrows,
I just informed HenMaster from North Clifornia about my progress I had with Henrietta. It's amazing, I thought poorly Henrietta has to wait a long time to get better. Prayers were answered and she is fine now. I isolated Henrietta for four weeks and kept her as adviced in semi-darkness to stop her from laying eggs. That failed as she kept producing the eggs, but having pushed the prolaps back, given her warm antiseptic baths and blowdried her gently she seemed to manage to keep the prolaps inside her. As we have summer here in the UK and the weather is very hot, i decided to let her join the others and it seemed to have done the trick. She spent the next half an hour on a dust bath and seemed to enjoy herself being with the other chicken. So I continued letting her stay and kept watching that she is alright. And she is, Yeephee.
Thanks for your concern and good advice.

It is hard work but it pays out. I hope you have the same success as I had and wish your chicken a speedy recovery

Welcome to BYC. Get some honey, sugar, or preparation H hemorrhoid cream and apply it to the vent prolapse to help reduce any swelling. Push it back inside, and hold it there for a few minutes (just put her in a towel, and watch some TV or something.) Use a rubber glove if you have them. I would also feel inside an inch or so with 1 finger to make sure there is not an egg stuck inside. Is she able to pass droppings? Keep pushing it back inside and keep it lubricated so it does not dry out.

Thank you so much. Yes she is able to pass droppings. But they are liquidy. I was able to feel for any trapped eggs but felt nothing. Now she did have what i think was, the soft shell part was coming out. I will go clean her and use the honey and cream. Thank you so much for your help
