Just hatched out a yellow peachick, both parents are India Blue

Lol, my neighbor has a fairly old pair of India Blues that have never successfully raised chicks. He is fascinated by my opal silver pied, which he believes is some kind of white bird. (We have a massive language barrier trying to communicate.) When I first saw his birds, I pointed out the white flights and told him he might get white chicks if they ever successfully hatched eggs. He was pretty excited.

Well a couple months ago, ONE chick somehow hatched, he managed to save it from the hen (who was well on the way to killing it), and we managed to somehow communicate well enough for him to keep it alive. It is yellow -- a white chick (not black shoulder) -- what a hoot! My elderly neighbor with elderly birds, who desperately wants white peas, ended up with one!

Now if I could just find another chick for him so poor Lucky isn't a lonely only over there...

Woohoo

Yippee!!! I went and checked on Lucky this evening, and he is doing really well

I've been worried the last week or two, because I haven't heard him crying. My neighbor put him outside pretty early, and I was really afraid something had happened to him, because the first couple weeks he was outside, he cried all the time... But at least I knew he was okay, because I could hear him crying, poor guy. When the crying stopped, I started worrying...

Turns out that after a couple of weeks penned separately, he was able to move Lucky in with mom & dad, and they are now being nice to it... go figure. So Lucky isn't crying (though he's pretty bonded to the neighbor), and he's doing well. Yippee

(You can see the blue parents in the background. My neighbor tells me nobody at work believes him about white chick from blue parents

So now, of course, my neighbor wants to know gender, and is really not buying my explanation that it's going to take a year or something like it to be able to tell visually on a white. Sigh. I had one of the grandkids translate about DNA testing, but that didn't go over well. So I guess we will know.... later. (I actually felt like Lucky was standing like a girl, but he really wants a boy, and really wants a pair in the end, so I didn't say anything. I could totally be wrong.)

Anyway, I am SO relieved that Lucky is doing well

Did I mention that my neighbor got the others when they were older? He's never raised baby chicks before... but he adores his birds

My neighbor said last night he was thinking 10 weeks -- I think that is about right, so 2 1/2 months, give or take a couple weeks.

Yes, I'm really fortunate, and I don't know whether I would have felt it was okay to move the birds up here without it. But I could hear his birds calling, so I knew there were peas nearby, and it seemed like the other neighbors weren't complaining, so I brought mine up here. I was really upset at the prospect of having to rehome them, so it was a huge relief. I think that most of the neighborhood doesn't know they are here, and just ignores the noise. I hadn't met him until MY peas calling got his curiousity up high enough to start trying to see into my backyard,

Did I mention he really loves peas? He showed up in a little bit of panic the evening they found the chick, but we managed to work through what to do over the next few days, and Lucky pulled through.

I think it's been hard for him to get information, since he doesn't speak that much English. But his English is great, compared to my Vietnamese and Chinese, which is non-existent

I keep forgetting to ask if he speaks French... Anyway, Lucky is doing great, and he's got a devoted grandad

Hey @zazouse , based on the number of white birds I see in your pictures you must have a few gazillion white peas...

How early do you find you can reliably tell gender?

Yep i have a few whites.
I can tell the sex by 3 to 4 months of age and if they fan all the time before that i know they are males
big_smile.png

So far the last two seasons only 10% of the whites i have kept have been males, the pieds on the other hand have been 90%male but i am good with that

I bought three white chicks that are now about four months old and have never seen any of them display. One is bigger than the other two, but that is the only indication that he may be male. I keep looking for the 'hurl' that New 2 said would indicate male but I think that is going to be some time off... Any other pointers Zaz?
