what breed lays JUMBO eggs ?

My Black Copper Marans lay X-large/jumbo, dark ruby/brown egg on a regular basis. Now I've never weighed mine or measured them, but I've had quite a few that would not fit in a Large egg carton. The lids won't close and the egg barely fits in the cup of the carton!

Here is a pic of some of the eggs. The lighter colored one came from a new layer Marans, that in a week, was laying the same color as the rest of the eggs!

A couple of the eggs pictured here prevented the lid from closing.

ISA Browns and Red Sex Links. Ours lay eggs that will not fit in a large carton, not even an extra large carton. We must have hard-to-find JUMBO cartons and even those, if they are the cardboard type often will not work. The foam is more forgiving. For such a small bird, relatively speaking, these hens lay eggs that are astounding. That they lay these almost everyday is also astounding.

Size of the egg depends a lot on the age of a hen. Jumbo eggs generally come from hens that are 2+ years old.

Breeds that tend to lay big eggs include: White Leghorn, Red Sexlink (aka Red Star, Golden Comet, Cinnamon Queen, Golden Sexlink, ISA Brown, etc), Rhode Island Red, Delaware, Barred Rock, and Buff Orpington.

Black Minorcas lay the largest eggs day in/ day out that I have ever seen. Jersey Giants do lay large eggs but just not many of them compared to others......
A good Minorca hen will lay an egg literally as big as your fist.....
