Can and will possums kill chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, etc?? We had a skunk at one point but after we realized it was eating cat food and moved the cat food out of reach we haven't seen the skunk again. However, last night we went out to put the birds to bed and opened the garage door where we keep their food, and a possum jumped out and ran. We can't even figure out how he got in the garage and it's way more secure than our chicken coop. Now I'm worried.

They will most definitely kill and eat full grown chickens. I had it happen a few months ago. Lost 2 hens. This week its a coyote pup after my free rangers. Must be a hard time for predators too...

'Possum killed one of my Brown Leghorns this week. Nearly ripped her head off. I got my hen (she was hiding under the coop) but couldn't get to the 'possum.

I set the live trap and so far caught two coons but not the blasted/killer 'possum. I'm still trying. Yes, they seem to be harder to trap than the coons. I'm afraid to let my chickens out now since it gets dark so early but don't want them in all day either. I want that blasted 'possum!

Ok, so if we ever were to catch a critter in a trap, what do we do with it then? We don't own guns. Could we bring it somewhere to a wildlife organization or veterinary office to be put down? I can't see us beating it to death, but letting it go somewhere else seems like trouble. Any of you not able to do the kill yourselves?

Possums are not predators but opportunists. If they are able to trap a hen or get her while asleep they may do damage. More likely they will go for eggs. My only loss to a possum was a hen duck sitting on eggs. Some people consider possum a delicacy--maybe you can find someone willing to butcher it.
