I'm sure my girls will get over it but in Maine this morning we woke up to 5 inches of snow. My entire 7 month old flock refuses to leave to coop. What chickens!

I've never had a chicken that would walk on snow. If it lasts long, I go shovel paths around the yard.

Chickens don't like anything new or strange. If they are not used to snow, they avoid it. Most years, I don't get enough snow for my chickens to ever get used to it. Last year, however, was different. Most of them never did like it, but I had some that eventually would get out and forage in two to three inches, as long as the grass and weeds were sticking up out of the snow. I even had a couple that trekked through 9" to go check out the compost heap.

From my experience, most chickens don't like it at all when they first see it but if exposed to it and given the option, some but not all will get used to it.

Last year we got quite a bit of snow up here in the Northern CA mountains. After first my chickens didn't like the snow and wouldn't leave the run or their coop. But after a few days their urge to free range took over and got tired of being cooped up. My chickens had no problems hanging out all day in the snow. Eventually they would just scratch their way through the snow and find the ground. However, we never got more than 1- 1 1/2ft. at any given time. So I am not sure how they would hold up in more snow. I still never shoveled anything except to get their door open. They did just fine

It rarely snows here but last year we had maybe an inch. I opened the coop door & the roo grumbled a little & went out like usual. Mine don't like the cold wind. They stay in the coop when the strong cold wind blows.

It will be interesting to see what my flock does this winter-IF we get snow.

Well it's Maine and there will be tons of snow, but we lost one of two most adventuresome chickens becase of it this morning. They love to free range but we can't let them if this is going to be the result. My husband wants to keep them cooped up. They have a fenced area but they fly out of it. Going to have to think of something. Any ideas?
