Parasites ? / Organic Natural Wormer?

Hi all!

I have a picture of my girls poop ( LOL! Now that's something you say everyday!

)... I hope I'm doing this right.... have you ever seen anything like this?

I'm not sure if it's parasites but whether it is or not, I'm sure I have to worm them. My girls are organic girls... is there a natural or organic way to treat parasites? I heard someone say they put organic soap in their water??

You definitely have a parasite problem! I don't know of any effective organic dewormer's, so I am basically giving you a bump, maybe somebody else can recommend something.

I personally deworm with Valbazen since it gets just about anything and everything a chicken will pick up. But you do have to discard egg's and since you need to retreat in 10 days that's about 20 days of no eggs. But it does take care of the problem. I know some people use pumpkin seeds or DE as a preventative, I don't actually have a lot of faith in that and I don't think they will have sufficient effect on an existing parasite load. Parasites are so damaging I just prefer not to mess around with them.

You can take a sample to the vet if you want, he'll be happy to charge you $$ to tell you they have worms and he'll recommend a dewormer, probably not organic unless you have a holistic vet.
 
I agree that they look like they where laid after, without a microscope to be sure though they do look like worm eggs. As far as a natural wormer goes you could grow wormwood, just wrap the outside with chicken wire so they can only pick at the leafs and not eat the whole plant. Never tried it before but from what I understand its common practice in Australia.
 
That's what I thought, but it was pretty fresh and it was cold here today so there are not many flies. I don't think flies lay eggs like that. Do they?

But, I found it in almost the same spot where I noticed the same eggs on another poop the other day. My girls are free range, but I do clean up every evening around the immediate area of the house so we don't step in anything

And I check all of the other poop and there's nothing.

I guess if one has it, I have to treat all 6?

I've used a form of natural dewormer. I'm not against using a synthetic form either. You can do this for 7 days straight if your only going to try a natural dewormer. Or 3 days for preventative. I used 1 table spoon of red pepper (the hot kind I get mine at the organic side of the grocery store. 90,000ui is what I get the higher the number the stronger it is)
Anyhow 1 table spoon of red pepper 1 large onion and 1 head of garlic. I grind it up in my food processor mix it with oats, scratch or BOSS and feed it to them. They always LOVE it! That recipee works for 20 or so hens. So if you have more just add more to it. I've butchered many of my chickens and have never found internal worms and I always check

I'm not saying its fool proof its just a recipee I was given. I always see a jump in egg production after giving it to them.

Those are tapeworm segments. Each segment contains hundreds of tapeworm eggs. You'll need to dose the infected bird 3-4 times, 10 days apart with valbazen. After dosing with valbazen, you will actually see the tapeworms in whole, excreted in the poop for several days.

I just called the guy we got our girls from. (We got them 4/1/11 and they were 6 mos old) This is our first time having chickens, so we are just learning these things. He said that he never worms his. He is supposedly a chicken breeder. We got them off of a truck that had about 100+ other birds. Should he be worming them? Should I only worm when I see something? Or should it be a regular thing? I know with horses, we tube wormed often.

The thing that strikes me is it is in NO other poop in the yard, just this one and I found another one in the same exact place yesterday w/ eggs on it. I wonder if it's another bug laying the eggs ON it? It certainly looks to me like the eggs are on there after but I can be so wrong.

I may just take a sample to my vet ...

I am going to post this on a few of the boards because I really feel like some natural miracle has occured on our small farm. We are certified organic so if we wormed with a synthetic wormer, we would lose certification for our birds. Most other farms just cull wormy birds, but we thought we'd try something out of the box and it worked! Our fecal float test came back negative for parasites and ova.


These are not the measurements we used, but the ratio is the same. I assume all of you don't have 100 chickens. We got all of it from Mountain Rose Herbs

1/2 cup Myrrh gum powder
2 cups ginger root powder
1 cup Rosemary
1 cup basil
1 cup thyme

We also ferment their food. I am sure that helped boost their natural defenses. For 2.5 gallons of fermented feed, I sprinkled 3 ounces per day of this mix over the top, as they were eating. Did this for 3 weeks
