Dogs!!!!

My Greyhound and Saluki were originally bred to hunt small prey so I wasn't surprised that they went after my chickens. I learned my lesson the hard way at the cost of my first 7 chickens. Needless to say, I will be making some significant changes when I get more. The dogs have learned to leave the cats alone so I have hope that with better fencing, lots of training and their muzzles (standard Greyhound /Saluki equipment); I can teach them to leave the chickens alone as well.

Sorry for your loss. I just had two get killed yesterday by my dog, too. She broke out of her pen. One is still missing =(

this just proves... you can NEVER trust your dog alone. My dog will jump up and grab there leg or head WHILE IM HOLDING THEM.

then i just VERY forcefully push her with my foot and lock her inside.

Plenty of us do - there are millions of farm dogs across the country that have free access to chickens and don't bother them.

A properly trained dog of the right genetics can absolutely be trustworthy.

Of this forum trying to get answers on how to fix the problem because mine are the same way and I can't relocate my coop it's permanent

Some people beat the dog with the dead chickns
Others tie the dead ones around the dogs neck

This sounds harsh but farm life isn't all sunshine and rainbows the dogs are not just being dogs they are there to protect or there to be pets not to kill.

They know it's wrong (at least mine do) so I'm sorry for you loss and don't hurt your dogs but spanking works in some cases.

It's not that it's harsh, it's that it really just doesn't work. And no, your dogs don't "know it's wrong". They know you're ****** off.

Dogs aren't smart enough and don't have long enough memories to associate being beaten with a chicken with killing the chicken earlier (people aren't even smart enough for that)- if you're going to reprimand/punish the animal, it has to either be while the attack is happening, or immediately after. The best you can do a couple hours later with these methods is make the dog afraid of the chickens, which works in a way, but often leads to the sort of thing where later at some point the dog feels cornered and kills a whole bunch of birds out of fear.

This sort of thing has to be fixed proactively - the dog shouldn't ever be alone with the birds. All contact should be with you present, and anytime the dog looks vaguely interested in the birds, he needs to be reprimanded. You need to train the dog, not punish him.

I am a very dominant leader of the pack and dogs respect that. My dogs wont go near anything that I proclaim is "mine", I taught them from when they were puppies that if I had something and I said it was mine they better not go near it, now it works with everything, I even have a sign for my two deaf dogs for mine, If they even look at something funny I just tell them it's mine and they look away instantly
