Red Junglefowl

Junglefowl come in 4 flavors and are the wild birds chickens are said to have been evolved from, the Red variety in particular.

They are almost certainly not pure, as scientists aren't sure any even exist anymore. They will be pretty, wild and are susceptible to chicken diseases when kept with domestic birds. They must be kept with care and attention.

I have got red junglefowl from cackle and there just OEGB's. They were not flighty, and did not act anything like a pheasant. I didn't lose a single one to diseases though.

I have a pr a got from a breeder as hatching eggs. If your interested in the real deal, or as pure as you can get they are going to cost$$$ way more then crappy hatchery stock. My rooster hardly ever crows and if so only in early early morning, and he sounds a little different then a "normal" rooster crowing. I would never let them out, they are flighty and act more like a pheasant.

Junglefowl are not pheasants. Many decades ago, this was the opinion that Junglefowl were a type of pheasant, belonging to the Pheasant family.
We know today that Junglefowl probably belong to their own family, the Gallusinidae. This theory is gaining common consensus amongst avian systematists.

Other members of this monophyletic family (Gallusinidae) to which the Junglefowl and their domestic cousins belong, are the Francolins, Bamboo Partridge, Coturnix, Chukar and Junglebush Quail. Their closest relatives are Francolins and Bamboo Partridge.

If you keep the junglefowl in enclosures with no visibility up to ~ four feet and some of the ceiling of the aviary and some of the walls covered in shade cloth, you will find them to be fairly calm. Keeping them with other species that are fairly mellow also may help in this regard. A single tame peahen or peacock is useful or a group of Mandarin ducks, a few doves- but keeping them by themselves in enclosures where they feel they have no depth to escape in leads to crazy birds.

the first of July 2011-now 5 months old. All are doing great- now about half the size of large chickens 3to4 lbs
almost the size of White Leghorns.
Very fast in running and fight, have alot of energy and don`t take much feed. Will be getting more this coming year.

Have Black Star, White Leghorn, Red Jungle Fowl, a lot of mixed breed chickens,  Guineas, Quail, Ringneck Pheasants.
Taking about 250-300 lbs of feed per week for all.
