I went to see an old friend a couple of days ago. I keep up with her mostly through facebook, but she lives in the same county as I do. She made an item for me for a shower gift and went to pick it up and pay her for it. I got to talking with her and her husband and OF COURSE I told them about my chickens. She said to her husband-" of all my friends from high school ( we are now 45) Tara is the one I would have least pictured as a chicken farmer." I don't know now if that is a compliment or not,lol. But I do love my chickens and I am looking foward to someday have a little farm in the country. But right now, I love my little urban farm!
 
Lol, it is probably not an insult. People say that more about my husband than me. We live on several acres now and his friends from his suburban high school get a laugh when he describes how he has to trap coons to protect the chickens.
 
After hitchin' up my jeans a thousand times a time over the last decade, I've just gone to wearing suspenders full time. Time has taken its toll on the body's ability to have the shape necessary to just use a belt with any effectiveness. Add to that, I've taken to wearing a ball cap with a tractor insignia most of the time. I've pretty much always worn flannel shirts, so now, the look is pretty complete.

I'd take it as the sincerest form of flattery. and.... smile!!
 
Some people are surprised when I tell them I have chickens. Others have known me awhile and knew that I'm married to a rancher and I'm usually working with him when it comes to the cattle. I work at a hospital, and some of my "new" regular patients call me "The Chicken Lady" when they want to ask for me, but can't remember my name.

Everone who knows me knows I have chickens. If you talk
To me for an hour I will always mention them. If walk into my gallery and showany kind of extra interest I WILL take you outback to see the "outside art" and I always point out the chickens and the garden. Are people surprised to see my back space in the city? Yep. Are they even more surprised that I LOVE chickens? Yep. Would you be?



Yes, I look like this most of the time :p this is everyday wear for me. I am always getting my "nice clothes" dirty lol

People who know me know that I've always been animal friendly but when I got chickens, it was very random. Some folks still don't know how to react. But the ones that know me well, aren't at all surprised. I've had pigs off and on since I was in High School so chickens aren't a huge leap.
I'm known as the little chicken lady, hence the username :)
I have gotten comments such as "I'd never imagined you'd be a farmer..."
I love the ones' that ask what I'm going to do with the eggs though

You can never tell what folks are up to by the way they dress.....

However, my man just started wearing suspenders, and I've been dressing like a chicken-farmer-stereotype lately!
The chickens are changing us....chickens are the gateway-drug farm animal! Now we want turkeys and pigs too.

 
Well, if the stereotype is denim skirts and t-shirts, "house dresses" and my favorite denim apron (matched with either yellow crocs or my black boots) than yes, I look like a chicken farmer.

Oh, and this time of year, add a parka that is three sizes too big and a few chickens sitting in the hood and pockets.
 
I am a social worker, so I have to dress semi- professional- to professional depending what is on tap that day. I get home just before dark, so some days I am out in the run with dress clothes and my polka dot chicken boots! I guess things just come full circle-My favorite outfit as a child was my Hee- Haw overalls! I wore them forever and when I got too tall my mother added length to the pant legs so I could keep wearing them.
 
Work clothes around home, but I have always changed into decent clothes to go to town, even when short of time. Recently, I was waiting behind a lady in the supermarket queue and noticed her trousers were covered in mud up to the knees. It made me realise that as I don't care about people out and about in town in their working clothes, why should anyone else? Vanity vanity! Incidently, what you call suspenders, we call braces here. Suspenders to us are those little metal gadgets attached to the bottom of corsets and used to hold up stockings, very flirty!!! Can't help but smile at the thought of cowboys wearing suspenders.
