EcoGlow Chick Brooder

I'm thinking of getting 2 of these this year for our baby chicks and ducklings rather than messing with the heat lamps. We raise our babies in a main room of our house and the lights are too bright at night (long story) plus they make us nervous that a fire could start when we're away. Having 1 lamp last year was hard enough, but having 2 this year (one for each kind of bird) i really think would be too many. We will have other supplemental light for them to keep them from piling on each other (night lights). Is the brooder a nice alternative to the lamps?

I'd like to know the answer to this too as I am thinking of buying one, think they only run on 18 watts power which is great, I have ceramic heat emitters which are good and don't emit light to heat the chicks but they use much more power and the lamp gets in the way I think the brooder would be much safer, but can the chicks not jump up on it and get out the brooder box? that's the only thing about it for me, it looks like it provides them with a step up!

I'm going to raise my chicks in a 2' x 4' stock tank this year with a baby gate over the top to keep the cats out and chicks in. So even if they get on top of it they still won't be able to get out. I'd think the brooder would be much safer and save on my electric bill. That heat lamp made us so nervous last year and it was really hard to get the temp right using it in the house.

I love the two Ecoglows I have. I have the larger ones and they work great. Less electricity used and the chicks love it. I do have a light on during the day so the chicks do have a light cycle. I find with the Ecoglow I can turn the light off at night and the chicks don't freak out. Unlike a heat lamp, there is always a light on. That first night without a light freaks them out. With the Ecoglow I turn the light off on their first night and no problems at all. Well worth buying a few if you plan to have chicks at least once a year.

Thanks! I'm not sure we'll be doing this yearly, but at some point we want to try meat chickens and let the kids hatch some eggs for a school project and i'm sure they will be handy again then though it might be a year or two.

Don't spend any more time wondering about 'em, just buy yourself an EcoGlow! I have both sizes. They're awesome. Right now, I have 3 silkie chicks in the house with the smaller unit, and 22 chicks out in the Chicken Kindergarten pen inside the coop with the larger unit. I had to wait until the chicks were about 3 weeks old to put them out in the coop, because the units work best at 50 degrees ambient temperarture; the coop gets colder than that at night. The larger number of chicks can huddle together under the larger unit so the colder temperatures don't bother them. The larger unit is set in quite deep a layer of pine shavings so there's plenty of insulation.

As time passes, the chicks love to get on the top of the brooder for their chick games. Just put a wire cover on your brooder bin if you don't want them practicing to get out of it.

The fact they go under it for a while to warm up and then run back and forth is SO like having a broody momma, plus they get the dark at night to help with the diurnal cycle.

Great, i think i might order them this next paycheck, then i know they'll be here well ahead of the chicks in April.

I bought one last year and I love it.
In the past I would worry about the heat lamp blowing out on the day-olds.
I do not normally spend money on things I really don't need, but the peace of mind is worth it for me.
The EcoGlow is very natural and the chicks go to sleep at night like they would in nature.

You don't know how many times I've gotten flat on the floor to try to peer under mine... sometimes I just can't take it any more and I lift it up quickly to see the babies and then put it back down again. Poor little goobers must wonder what the HECK is going on when I do that.
