Would Anyone Support This?

I'm sure many of you remember nurse_turtle's Bra-bator. I was very surprised to see how long it did last. All the way to lock down!

I began to wonder… since the lower temp extended maturation, would changing the chick to a normal incubator at lockdown, or a day before, be enough for it to hatch?

It's not unheard of of eggs to hatch in unusually extended periods of 100+ degree weather in hotter places around the world. And the weather isn't exactly always steady. SO eggs do hatch under less than optimal circumstances. I had a friend's mom who hatched eggs in a bowl under a light. They just wanted to try it. All hatched and they didn't turn them or anything. So the idea that the bra-bator could actually work floated back into my head.

I would like to give it a shot myself. I have the err… equipment, the time and dedication it takes. I am a college student so I spend a lot of time sitting down in a class or driving in my car commuting. So I don't think they'd get jostled so much. I also remember that I may possibly have a high than normal body temperature ( I need to recheck this) that is closer to 99 degrees. ( I used to get fevers all the time as a little girl so I had my temperature monitored a lot

lol.) I also wear hoodies all the time and they keep me extra warm. Could this possibly make up for the 1-2 degree difference?

Well anyways, I really wanted to know whether or not people would support me on here if I chose to recreate her experiment. I know it didn't work (but a lot of eggs stop developing at that time with normal incubation too!) so I'm not sure how people would respond. I'd like to do this and report the information like nurse_turtle did, it was so fascinating!

…I've discovered I can fit 2 eggs comfortably. So if I did try this it would be with two eggs. I already have the eggs i'd try. One is a large EE egg from one of two gorgeous hens (and a stunning pure white ee or ameraucana rooster) and one from a weird looking crested hen and the same rooster.

The ee egg is most likely from my hen's sister… so that would be interesting to see.

…so…should I try this?

Haha, lol.

Lolz jk, I'm just curious to see if it's possible. How far she got makes me think it just might be.

I dont' understand this. We are building a DP flock, so yes, some will end up in the freezer but it is not done on a whim. When I set an egg I do so with the knowledge that this is creating a life. One that should be treated with respect and gratitude.

If the eggs showed any sign of being held back and stunted during the period where they ARE growing and are healthy I'll pop them into an incubator. I don't want them to die, I want to test an old theory. Personally I'd rather have a chick not hatch then hatch a bunch and cull based on looks and breed standards. Sorry if you do not agree. I do respect all life which is why if I found trouble along the way I would stop the"experiment" and hatch them normally.

Where the freek did I say I would cull based on looks or standards? Quit trying to make yourself feel better for your little experiment.

eta; and by the time you knew something was wrong they would be dead already

The whole thing is absurd. Just fry the darn eggs. At least then your'll have a decent breakfast, even if you won't be able to post about it.

eta: and being told to chill and then reading your signature is really a bit contradictory

and edited again because it came across like a personal attack and it was not meant to

Heta,
They are your eggs, your chicks..... do whatever you want with them.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with experiments. They can be fun. Some experiments fail, some succeed.

I was making a reference to some rather standard policy with chicken hatchers. Please don't fight with me over this I was just asking people's opinions, you've expressed yours. I haven't set anything yet anyways, so there is no reason to start getting angry with me. I don't need to make myself "feel better." I was simply explaining a backup plan to prevent anything from happening to them. Since apparently you don't approve, that's fine. Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
