What breeds lay the Most eggs & what breeds are the nicest?

Every April My family goes to this Chick Day thing where we get chicks & this year we are getting 12. We sell the eggs to save money for Vacations & more of our hens are older now & don't lay as much, & more people want to buy eggs so we have a problem. So does anyone have any idea about what breeds lay more or faster?

Also we have some problems with other chickens being picked on by the mean ones which I know is natural but I have had chickens in the past who were the sweetest things and I want to have as many nice ones as possible. So what breed is the sweetest in your opinion?

Honestly if you keep going to buying chicks from stores, hatcheries, feedstores, etc - You're very likely to get good layers that quit out just a couple or few years down the road, no matter the breed, but especially the more common or better laying ones. So are you still wanting to just replace every few years? As for personality, it really depends on the strain and individual, so, best you try and skip the most populars (RIR's, Leghorns, Australorps, Sex-Links) and go more for something else. Like Brahmas. From hatcheries and feedstores they're still good layers, bred to be that way, but they're always very mellow birds.
 
If it was me and I was wanting good egg layers and all I wanted them to do is lay eggs I would go with,
White Leghorns for White eggs and ISA's for Brown eggs.

I don't think thats the problem because we have only gotten chicks for the past 2 years & we have way more of the older chickens that we started out with 4 years ago. We only have 9 from the past 2 years. We plan on getting chicks every year so the whole stopping in a few years doesn't matter really but that is helpful news!
 
There are so many choices of birds. Are you wanting just hens and no roo? If just strictly egg production you can't beat the feed store. Look around and try to get several different breeds so you get a pretty egg basket. I think that's what it is all about. I like the different colors of brown/tan/ cream and white of course. You also might want to think about a wellsumer or a marans for a darker colored egg and a blue egg layer like an EE, or ameraucana. I realize that the other non hybrid birds don't lay as many as the productions strains. My egg customers love the colors of my cartons too. IF strictly for egg production, look at the hybrids like black or redstar, ISA, or a leghorn strain.
