Thanks for the idea of putting her food up.. Oh and today she brought the chick out into the garden while I was out (I opened the coop door to see if she would) and she found a roach and the chick came and snagged it from mommy and ran lol... Mommy bird was chasing the chick but the chick prevailed lol... is it OK for it to eat little bugs and stuff already, I mean I'll look it up, but just curious if anyone knows off hand for sure.. and mommy was feeding chick stuff she was finding, so should I keep the chick confined and only on chick food for now.. just worried there might be some old scratch out and I don't want it to get it, but if a litt they find is OK then OK... thanks a lot everyone....I can't wait seeing her with that chick!

You are making me so excited for my babies to hatch! Yes, it's okay for baby to eat bugs...mama is teaching her how to forage. You probably looked that up by now tho ; ) Maybe make sure there is some grit available for baby though...small grit (If I remember right, I think I used parakeet grit).

Love the stories!

Oh my gosh, they are so cute!!!  Wow, I never get tired of looking at cute baby chick pics!  Congrats on your babies!  And thanks for posting the pictures.  I can't decide which way I like better - hatching chicks in an incubator (because you can watch them hatch, hold and play with them all you want, and let them really get to know you) or hatching them with a broody (because it is so much fun to watch momma teach them and take care of them).  Guess I'm gonna have to keep hatching them both ways!  lol  Don't tell hubby - he thinks I have too many chickens already!  And he thinks he's done building me chicken pens!  ha!  I got a couple Black Copper Marans chicks last month, and they both died of Cocci, I want some of those Sooooo bad!  Just a couple!  SO tempted to order a few eggs......

This one on the bottom has a beard and muffs, came out of a blue egg. 3 of the 4 babies have black feathered legs and the other has yellow feathered legs. The others came out of white, dark brown and light brown eggs.

They really made my day when I came home from the hospital. I cried  I was so happy.

Ok... I am REALLY late to the party! I set eggs on the 17th also! Can I join? I set 12 lavender Orpington eggs. I just candled for the first time and took out 5 clear eggs. I saw veining AND movement in 5 and the last two look great except for the fact that I did not see movement... I was quick though so maybe they were sleeping?

I have 2 incubators.....

Hatch 1 & 2

Incubator 1 - hatched 5 out of 20. Was not surprised because my girls laid their first eggs ever two weeks before and my boy was even younger... Also, I was not planning on incubating so soon so my son was running out and grabbing the eggs... We then threw them into a basket in the kitchen... Even washed some of them... Basically, we got the incubator in the mail and just went and grabbed eggs out of the eating basket and threw them in to see what happend. I was happy with 5 under those circumstances. hmm.png

Incubator 2- ordered 18 shipped eggs from TX and due to PO got nothing but scrambled eggs... Only one developed but did not hatch. sad.png

Hatch 3 & 4-

Incubator 1 - was supposed to hatch tomorrow! Oh the pain! The day before yesterday, just after lockdown, I went to check the humidity and found that my son UNPLUGGED IT TO CHARGE HIS IPAD!!!!! I have no idea how long it was unplugged but the temp was down to 73. sad.png. I still have them in there but do not expect any to hatch.

Incubator 2 - Set on the 17th. Crossing my frustrated little fingers!

Of COURSE you can join!  And welcome!!  I would not give up on your unplugged eggs!  I read many a story on here of power failures and whatnot, and the chicks did ok.  They maybe might take an extra day or 2?  Never give up hope!  haha - to charge his Ipad!!!!  arghh!!!  I can totally relate!  Dang kids!  hmm.png

I've had some mixed results on shipped eggs.  One time I ordered 2 dozen Polish eggs and not a one of them hatched.  sad.png    Another time I had 10/12 Silkie eggs hatch ok.  I have 30 Guinea eggs in the bator right now (for my mom - I hate those things!  lol)  Too early to candle yet, but I heard those things do well after shipping.  I dunno?  Do some breeds do better than others, or is it all up to how they are handled during shipment?  My local carrier brought my last box up to my house, carrying them like there was a bomb in there or something!  haha  I guess he took "fragile" seriously!

Can't wait to hear how your hatch goes - keep us posted and good luck!   pop.gif

AAAAAHHHHH I am so excited, celebrate.gif     I finaly got up the energy to candle all 30 of my eggs today! Out of those 30 I took out 9 that looked to not be firtle. So I have 21 eggs that all had very bouncey babies in them!!!!wee.gif I am so thrilled by this I wanna candle them again.... but I wont, I will wait untill maybe day 14 to candle again. I am trying to open it as little as possible sense my first 2 hatches gave me nothing but a buch of eggtopsies to dohe.gif

I have a funnel taped to some aquairium tubing that leads to my water trays so I can fill them with out opening the incubator.

QUESTION: I have read that many people have an incubator and also a hatcher..... Do any of you guys do this? And why? Does it make for a better hatch in your opinion or is it just a preferance?

Also thank you for all the well wishings everyone. This may sound kinda lame but I am useing ya'll and this site to try and keep my mind occupied and not dwelling on what happend. I am thankful for the suport and the drama free invironment here. Also I think we just have a good group of people not just on this site but here on our own little thread! Thanks so much ya'll!hugs.gif
