24 hour old pip

OK so this is my first batch ever. I have made all kinds of mistakes and learned so much.  I had an egg pip about this time last night. This morning it made a bigger hole but in the last 8 hours nothing has happened. There is no movement. One of the eggs was chirping this morning but I have not heard that in a few hours either. I only incubated 7 eggs. I started on Saturday 3 Sats ago so they are a bit overdue.  So should I try to help my pip or just let it go? It may already be dead but I can't help but hope if I did something ... here is a picture taken around 3 today:

After 24 hours I have a hard time not trying to help.

If you choose to help...get some warm water, tweezers and q-tips.  Carefully chip pieces off the large end.  You should be able to see if the chick is alive very quickly.

I would definitely help. The chick has pipped at the wrong end of the egg. Chip away slowly and carefully at the shell. Use a q-tip and warm water to moisten the membrane if needed. If you see blood, stop and put it back in the bator. For the others, I would candle them to look for signs of life.

OK I helped but I did make it bleed.  I was not able to zip all the way around. I did about 3/4.  I started at the pip and tried in one direction and that is what started bleeding.  The chick is still alive.  It was chirping and still trying to get out.  Maybe I should have left it alone?  What does it mean that it is bleeding?  Did I kill it? sad.png I applied warm water with a q-tip and put it back in the incubator.

Bleeding means it isn't quite ready to hatch. The bleeding will stop. You didn't kill it. I'm thinking maybe you'll have a chick by morning.

Here is a picture of it back in the incubator. I hate opening and closing the incubator!  I do it quickly and I do have wet paper towels in there. You can see the blood but the chick is still chirping and trying to get out now. IMG_3705.JPG

Oh thank you so much for responding!! I will leave it alone and wait(I hate waiting!)!  Hopefully the bits I was able to pull off the shell will help it to break out when the time comes since it is trying to break out from the small end.

Hmm well I am dangerous! I have read so much and i get confused.  So I dabbed the bleeding spot with the warm. wet q-tip which is where the chick pipped. I hope it was so little water that I did not drown the poor baby.  If it survives it will be a miracle!!  One of the eggs is rocking and rolling.  I hope it does not have this trouble!!

I helped one chick out this hatch. It did bleed around the umbilical cord. It was weak for a few hours but 12 hours later I can't even tell it apart from the others. Whichever one it is, it's doing fine. It was pipped for a little over 24 hours as well.

So my pip is still just a pip but it is still alive. The bleeding stopped.  We are at 36+ hours since first pip. This is day 25 of my incubation. I still have another egg rocking and rolling. My eggs are very late hatchers--well if they are going to hatch at all. Even the one I did hatch was on day 23 so not early! I think I will help zip the rest for this chick and then see what happens.
