What did you do in the garden today?

@Coldd, welcome to the garden thread! This is a really nice, chatty, helpful bunch of people, so grab a cup of coffee, iced tea, whatever, and sit down. Any questions, just ask; probably someone here has had the same thing happen.

Where are you located? You can put your location in your profile, and then it's always there. Just the state is fine.

Cool to chilly this week. Rain forecast for this afternoon and Wednesday. Wednesday is my chiropractor appointment/get errands done in town day, so that timing is good for me.

Does anyone here have Montmorency cherry trees? We have two young ones. We planted one 3 years ago, the other 2 years ago. This is the first year they've had more than a couple blossoms. But we won't get any fruit. It looks like none were pollinated, and the flowers just faded and dropped off. There is a wild apple tree 100 feet away that has plenty of fruit developing, so I know it's not for lack of bees. Other apple trees in the area have fruit developing too. Are the trees just too young to bear yet? They sure look healthy, at least.

Morning all. I swung by the locally owned nursery yesterday (yes while it was 100 out, I'm dumb I know) and ran into a surprise. Pequin peppers. These little peppers, which I won't touch but hubby likes, are super hot. They are really small too, probably an inch or less at most. So I picked up two plants and stuck them in the ground last night and watered.

It's just not possible to work the garden at all between 11AM and 7PM with the triple digit temps. Which, in the evening my crawling baby gets cranky and wants to be held and cuddled, so I have to wait until after the kids are in bed to get my butt outside and do anything. This morning's work window is already closing. It's only 10 and 85 outside already.

Did I mention I have to wear a UVP cardigan and hat not to turn into lobster lady? 🦞

then later in the year when I pull the onions or garlic I will plant a 2nd round of squash in those beds & they fare much better than the first.

OOOHH! Good to know! about when do you do this? I have an entire bed dedicated to garlic right now (spring planted), but it will come out at some point, so I wonder if I'll have enough time to plant some squash at that point?

@Coldd , and any other new garden thread participants, YES! We love to know where (in general) you are at! We can commiserate together due to similar weather, or live vicariously through you during our cold (or extreme heat for some) weather.

But it does help! That intense sun is hard on the skin!

Not sure any of my peppers are going to make it. They clearly do NOT like being in the mulched part of the garden. Last year I had them in a tire bed and they went gangbusters. I guess I will take note of that for next year. DH kindly reminded me that we don't really *need* any peppers this year.... I was only growing them to can for roasts and to make hot sauce since we go through A LOT of it. Oh well....

I usually pull the garlic mid June-July. I direct sow the squash & at that time of year it comes up & grows quick. The squash will produce well into Sept anyway. I guess everything will depend on how your garlic does, but last I saw it seemed to be in line with mine for the most part!

I just planted two rows of kale, one each on the south side of the bush beans. The beans are far enough ahead of the kale not to get shaded out, so making use of space. Kale and beans "play well" together, so I've read.

The garden is in maintenance mode now. Weed, water, mulch, repeat as necessary. The next harvest will be garlic scapes. I could cut a few today.
