What did you do in the garden today?

Hey all.

I’m sad, my garlic & onions are starting to sprout. & I mean my eating ones, not the ones in the garden. 😂 I wish I could find a way to store them past Jan. If only I had a basement. I may put them in the fridge to stretch it a little longer, bad idea?

I think my oldest bird is on her way out. She stopped laying a week or so ago & yesterday someones poop looked like scrambled eggs so I would imagine a reproductive infection. She still looks ok & is eating, but shes kind of hanging on her own. She is a favorite of mine, I wish there was something I could do for her but I think the best I can do is have DH put her down. I will see how she is later today or maybe tomorrow. I don’t want her to suffer.

I use mesh bags for storing onions & garlic & I think they would be great for holding melons! The ones I have came in a bunch of sizes, are washable & reusable.

(they work great as grocery bags too!)

This wouldn't be to protect against critters but to support the weight of the fruit as it grows on the trellis. I've done vertical gardening with melons before and used homemade slings which still caused rot. I'm hoping the mesh produce bags (20" x 24") will work better. Plus I can use them for mushroom hunting... 😉

I used to throw them in the pantry and let them sit, if they are HUGE they could get gushy but otherwise they did what they did. If you need, onions you are kind of screwed but the garlic bust it up see which clove is growing and separate tha from the other and store them in the fridge. You can always freeze it too and thaw and eat later. I got garlic now in one of my bedrooms i can smell it, not sure how it ended up in there but ill need to get it out and get it planted this weeh. sheesh the more i get done the farther behind i fall.

Another shining example of your stellar personality. Thank you, can I have another?
If you are that starved for attention, sure we could go back and forth all week if you want, but why not just go hug a chicken. I bet they'd be able to put up with you, tho you might need to bribe them with a snack or two.

Good idea, I didn’t think about freezing anything. I can chop & freeze onions too. I have a project to work on when DH gets home (bag of onions is over my 5 lb weight limit).
that crisper drawer in the fridge, if you don't have it full of other stuff, I find that if you set them at the 'dryer' 'drier' ??? setting, that stuff won't rot so much but will more want to dry out. even if it does get wrinkly and crunchy, unless you are tossing a salad with it, shriveled onion or garlic will still taste fine in any dish that you use it in really.

Yes I DO use garlic in my salads. Bit of a coarser grind and just a very light sprinkle, or another trick is to get the mooshy pureed' garlic and add some water to it, let it soak and then take the very concentrated garlic water and just spray it lightly on the salad. That way it all has the garlic flavor with no 'hot spots'. If you are going to do this, if you have a gourmet store, or grow your own like I do, id use a sweeter garlic, the hot ones can get way too pungent for this method.

Mine were doing the same so I just took them out to the garden and planted them. The only other alternative was to chop them up and freeze them. Freezer space is at a premium so I opted to simply plant them instead. Oh well.... I'll cover them up before a freeze and hope they make it through.
