Our neighbor, who gave us our original chicks a couple months ago, called yesterday and said he hatched some bantams if we wanted to take any from him.

I have some questions, we have 7 chicks, about 12 weeks old. We have a big coop, big enough for about 15 chickens (we built big in case we wanted more.) What are the risks of taking these bantam birds? I already told him we had to wait a few weeks... (we are getting married next Saturday, and I didn't want to have to worry about baby chicks right now)... Will I need to build another coop, or is it at all possible that all these birds can get along? I dont know much of anything about chickens, let alone bantam chicks!

Thanks!

First of all: Congratulations!

O.K. chickens... Once they're about 6-7 weeks old they should be able to deal with the older ones. There will be some pecking and chasing and establishing the pecking order. Just keep and eye on them, so you can intervene if needed. If you want to you can divide your run and keep them separate for a bit, but so they'll see each other. That'll help the integration.

Congratulations on the wedding!!

I have bantams mixed in with with my other chickens, and they get along fine so no worries there. As chicks, I kept them separate at first. However, the bantams kept getting in with the others and nothing happened so I just put them together. I'd say, section off part of your coop for the bantams to be close to/interact with the others but won't be able to be attacked. Then after they become accustomed to each other and the bantams have gotten a little bigger, you can put them together.
