Chicks are a week old, and getting pretty big, growing lots of wing freathers....do they still need their heat lamp?

I have it raised up quite a bit, but I'm scared they will get chilled...

It totally depends on their behavior.

If they don't have the light, they look happy and they roam around their environment when they're awake, they probably are okay without it. They tend to sleep huddled together anyway, but if they stay huddled together when they're awake, they probably could use a little more heat.

If the heat lamp is on, and they sleep as far from it as they can, and tend to stay away from the lamp as much as possible, then it's probably too warm for them.

I think I stopped using the heat lamp after the second week with my group of chicks.

i've always done 5 degree a week until you get it to w/e temp it is outside. Its usually 80 here where i live, so at 3 weeks or so i'll take the heat away and just put in a 60watt on a timer.

Far from being an expert here, but I try to put a heat lamp at one edge of a fairly large container, and let the chicks regulate themselves. So far it has worked very well. I have yet to use thermometers to monitor any temps.

x2 on that as well, its always good to have a brooder large enough to where when the chicks get older, they can get away from the heat if they so desire.

my chicks were 3 weeks on wednesday, i just moved them into my garage where it stays around 85 in the day and 75 in the night. They will be fine.

we start ours at the first week a foot off the floor and each week we raise it until they're feathered and can regulate their temp. Mind you, we're in nova scotia and on the ocean so it's damper and chillier here longer. It worked well for our chicks last year and it's the plan for this new batch as well.
