Antibiotic injections for ducks?

What concentration was the penicillin you use for ducks? I am helping a friend with a wounded duck and gave it an IM injection of 300k Penicillin G of 0.1cc and I plan to do this daily for 5 days. Do you think this will work? We don't know what attacked the duck. It has a deep jagged cut on its head down to the bill between the eyes, gouges in the bill from teeth or claws, dried blood on one wing and behind the other wing. I started the pen. because the duck had an infection type odor the evening after injury. I know how to treat chickens, but have no experience treating ducks. Any information on treating ducks with IM penicillin would be helpful. Thank you.

Welcome to BYC! How much does your duck weigh?

With the penicillin you have, the dose for chickens and turkeys is about 0.15ml per *pound*. Haven't found any duck specific dosing, but I bet it's the same.

We didn't weigh the duck. I went by the average weight of a male Pekin duck I found on the internet of 8-11 lbs. and estimated the duck to be 10 lbs.

I have this antibiotic: Penicillin G Injectable contains 300,000 units of penicillin G procaine per ml. Dosage: Cattle/Horses/Swine/Sheep - 1 ml IM per 100 lbs body weight once daily. I estimated the duck to be 10 lbs and the dosage to be 0.1 ml.

That's for cattle, not poultry.

If I give the duck 0.15mL per pound - that would be 1.5cc (for a 10 pound duck) but a 100 pound cow only gets 1cc? ... I am just not comfortable with that dosage for the duck. I understand the bottle instruction is for a cow, but I would think a duck at 10 pounds would get less than a cow at 100 pounds, not more. I am just not comfortable with that.

Many people think that because a bird is smaller that it gets less medication per pound, but in many cases it's not true. Safeguard de-wormer is a good example of that... birds, cats and dogs get 10x what cattle and goats get. Do what you feel is best, or maybe call a vet school and ask them.
