Looking for other folks in Corona CA that want chicken laws changed! Just bought our first home (moved from an apartment) and was so excited at the opportunity to keep chickens ... only to find out that Corona doesn't allow it!

Does anyone know of any groups/meet ups in the area working to get the law changed? i'd love to join... and if not i'd love to start one!

How have other people gone about approaching City governments? Any success getting laws changed?

Thanks!!!

I would never have guessed that Corona doesn't allow chickens! That has always seemed like an animal-friendly area to me. Perhaps start by talking to your neighbors and perhaps finding out what the city would require to change the law. You may need a petition, you may need to get something put on the ballot, I'm not sure Asking the city about it would be the first step, I imagine.

Thanks for the replies! I was definitely surprised!

I was unclear on the ordinance so I called the City and they said "No Chickens". I had also heard from others in the area that keeping chickens in Corona was illegal. I am doing some more research into the ordinance now - hoping I can find some good news!

Hi
I live in Corona , Ca and like you would love to change the ordinance that does not allow chickens. Please keep me posted in whatever you find.
I was just browsing the internet serching for info on how to change an ordinance when I found this post.
I live in South Corona.

Thanks you!!!!!

Hi ValD! So happy you posted!

I did some more research yesterday on the City ordinances and basically only properties zoned as Agricultural (A) are permitted to keep chickens. What I found interesting was that some non-agricultural, low density (IE large lots) zoned areas were allowed to keep horses... but not chickens! Seems surprising to me at least...

I also live in South Corona and our zoning only allows 3 cats and 3 dogs. After looking through the ordinance it seems there are a few options.

The first, most obvious is to go to the City Board of Zoning and request that they permit the keeping of a small flock of hens in single family residential areas. I haven't done enough research to know how to go about this, or how to increase our chances of being successful, but I anticipate this route is a longer process. I think it would definitely help to have more residents on board and supporting the effort - but having just moved here I don't really know anyone in Corona.

From what I've read, in going to the Board of Zoning, we might give examples of other city ordinances or suggestions for an ordinance - However I have also read that some cities have requirements on distance of coops from other dwellings/property lines, and in most cases this is just another form of restricting the keeping of chickens - since most single family home properties are not large enough to meet the requirements (IE 50 feet from neighboring dwelling - nowhere on our property would we be more than 50 feet from a neighboring dwelling).

Another possible route may be to apply for a permit from the animal control officer. In the ordinance, these permits seem to apply more to larger wild/possibly vicious animals (listed as lions, tigers, and bears, etc) but something to consider. I was planning to call the animal control officer and ask if that's a possibility - and go from there.

So that's what I've found so far - Plan to keep researching so I'll let you know what I find! Do you know anyone else in Corona that's interested in backyard chickens?

Thanks!

Yes!!!! Thank you for everything you have done so far.
We have been here in Corona for 10 years and we do have friends here. Even if they do not want chickens I am pretty sure they would be willing to sign a petition.
You have our support on this. We would be happy if they just allowed us to keep 2 chickens!
Let me know what you find out and I will send an e-mail out to see what kind of feed back I get.

Thanks!!!

So glad there is more people from Corona that want to change the ordinance. Well....I honestly do not even know where to start.......any ideas?
