Love the Barred Rocks! I am kicking myself for walking away from TSC last week without some chicks - that is the one breed I really want to get this year (didn't want to deal with any more chicks though after a fiasco with 8 RIRs... but now my 3 BLRW are looking pretty pink up top so I might only have 3 pullets this year. Hindsight is 20/20 right?)
Anyway, beautiful birds! Speckledhen - your guy is just gorgeous! I have never seen one with feathering like that before...
Wow! He made my eyeballs dance. No, he's handsome, for sure, but he's a typical hatchery BR cockerel. I love all my BRs, both hatchery, descended from hatchery and my heritage show stock. I think all BRs are wonderful and I started with hatchery Rocks.
This is a show quality BR male, though this is a young photo and he had more filling out to do.You can see the difference in the barring from your boy's:

No offense taken!A lot is made here on BYC between true, Rhode Island Reds, (largely thanks to Bob Blosi) and the hatcheries which primarily sell production reds. What hasn't gotten as much attention is the difference between a true bred Barred Rock and the hatchery stock. I've both, so please, I'm not dissing anything or anyone. Just saying Speckledhen's photo shows what a Barred Rock is supposed to look like.
