Help … my hen is growing is growing spurs…

My top hen ( part australorp) has become aggressive over the last week and today I notice she is growing a spur! I also think she might be molting. She hasn't laid for a few days, the other week she starting eating her eggs . So a couple of the comments here link up. Maybe she does need protein ?

Welcome to BYC!

If she is molting, you will not only see feathers everywhere, but you should see some pin feathers coming in behind the neck and around the head. Usually they start a molt at the head. And generally with molting, they don't become aggressive, but shy and timid. So something else maybe going on here. Try to get a handle on egg eating as this will become a habit that you will never break. Put curtains over your nest boxes, and keep a fake egg in each box always. These hard eggs will help to discourage them from eating the real ones if the birds think the real ones are as hard as the fake ones. The darkened boxes will also help to deter the egg eating as well.

But it never hurts to add more protein to a chickens diet with some cooked meat...ground beef or ground turkey a couple times a week can do wonders for molting birds.

My best girl, golden comet, best layer, brooded successfully twice and just recently, and earned pet status is growing spurs. I hope this is normal and she is healthy. My flock is healthy and free range on 2 acres. I'm praying it is a healthy condition and normal.

Greetings from Nebraska....I have a Black Australorp hen who is one year old and is a fantastic egg layer. Recently, I noticed what appear to be Spurs growing from her legs. Is this normal? I'll put some pictures in the next post.

That looks like how long my stepmoms road island reds spur is. the hen has only one growing. Thier is a rooster in the flock.

Speaking of spurs my stepmoms friend found a rooster and gave him to me. My question is he's spurs are about 1 inch long how old do you think he is from his spurs?

Don't mind the dirty feet, I put stuff on them to treat for scaly leg mites and it picks up dirt. However, this is my Buff Orp Cluck-Cluck, she started growing spurs this summer, and it is December 4th now, i took this photo yesterday. I'm wondering how long her spurs will get? She laid up until she entered a molt. She is in a long slow molt she started a couple months ago. i'm sure she will start back up laying like the others come spring. weird stuff these spurs. She was hatched may 2014. She is in the top 3 hens in pecking order.
