Hi everyone,

Is anyone from Mallorca? or living in Mallorca?? There must be someone. Keeping chickens & poultry seems to be different here as the climate is different. Would love to know where you are and what you keep.

I am new to chickens too, and learning as I go along. I have 9 pullets and one unexpected Roo. So far so good, I have learnedd so much here. We are heading into winter here, and are expecting a big storm this weekend! YUC.

I have relatives on the east coast of Sicilia,

Hi. Not on Mallorca, but in Spain. I guess that´s the best we´ll get. I´m a newbie too and I know nothing about keeping chickens, however, that is not going to stop me. You might be better placed to give me advice than the other way round though.

What chickens to you keep?
 
Hi Pensionista, sorry for the delay in replying, been a little busy with things of late.

I have no idea what chickens I keep, they are from here in Mallorca, as far as breed is concerned I have yet to discover! My hens are about ready to start laying, however, I think that as we are into winter and the days are a little shorter it may not happen for a bit longer.

Here's a pic of them.








Our cockerel now crows a lot, thankfully not too early at the moment, but I actually quite like the sound. If you or anyone else know's about the breed let me know. I have them for eggs (and possibly chicks if we have a broody hen) and I expect they are a mixed breed.

It is now getting really chilly here especially at night. The sun came out earlier this afternoon though and that was lovely and warm at about 13 degrees. It rarely snows here at our level, but the mountains will soon have it.
Keep us up to date with your pullets, which I am sure are no longer pullets!!! hee hee.

Your Roo looks like a red sex link, so like you said,, a mix breed... here is a picture of one, what do you think?


Did you get them all from the same place, as it looks like some of your girls are red sex links as well. His body reminds me of my Columbian Wyandotte, with the neck feathers and the black tail, maybe that was his dad? I'm no expert, but I think he is def a red sex link of some mix. So makes sense that he would be a product of the red sex link hens, and whatever they were mated with.

He is a beautiful guy!

Let us know when you get eggs. My small flock is entering their 20th week, and I am hoping to see some eggs too, even with the shortened winter daylight. I have checked around here and have been told first time layers heading into this time of year will still lay a bit. Yipppie!

I have a thread going in the breeds section here. But no-one has come up with anything concrete yet.

I keep thinking the cockerel looks like a light sussex (comparison pic below)

This is a pic I downloaded fromthe internet for comparison.

The leg colour is different but everything else tells me he's one of these. Of course he probably is a red sex linked bird as the girls are. I bought them together, red girls, white boys. My one is lovely. Also when I look at pics of the females online (red sex linked) none of them seem to have black tail feathers!! It's a tricky thing to figure out.

Yes, they may be RIR,, my RIR have several black tail feathers like that.

Columbian Wyandotte have theright leg color,,, and maybe he got the single comb from the RIR mom?
