Trust me you wont be disappointed. I have since been using this recipe with no problems what so ever. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/waffles-i/ Post back when you buy one, what you think of it. I am so in love mine and have been using it way more then I should be, LOL!

as for cooking it more evenly...after pouring the batter in, close it and then flip the whole waffle iron...that way it will cook more evenly...of course either flip it again in a few minutes or sometimes I open it and flip it inide so the more undercooked part is on the hot...both ways are helpful...

Also, I hope you cooked off the wax...that may be the problem
