Mooresville IN fight for chickens

Last night I received a knock on my door from our town's Animal Control. I now have to get rid of our four laying hens. I know of a couple of other residents who have had small flocks (under 5 hens) that have had to remove their chickens. Just wondering if anyone on here is in the area and would like to help me organize to change the ordinance. The town's main argument is that chickens spread disease. I am doing lots of research through the CDC and other sources to find information on cases reported. If anyone is in the area or has good resources, please let me know. Thanks!

Yes, Indianapolis does allow chickens. My girls went to live in the middle of downtown.
 
Hi, just wondering if anything ever came of this. We are looking to possibly get some hens in Mooresville. Thank you.
 
No, I haven't been able to do anything. We just had our second child so I'm staying busy. I would suggest if you want to get some hens in Mooresville to make sure your neighbors are ok with it and build them a very secure run where it is 100% out of sight. I wish we had a privacy fence so none of this would have happened. If you want them to be free range, I would highly suggest a privacy fence. Good luck!
 
The Town of Mooresville is very backwards with today's times and knowledge, WAY to much "Good Ole Boys" running the town and not actually checking into current research etc...
 
I also had chickens and turkeys in my back yard in Mooresville, IN and animal control made me get rid of them as well. They were given to me by my uncle and we hatch some ourselves. It really upset me because I had two beautiful full blooded Royal palm turkeys and they are almost extinct. (I had a male and a female). I also had chickens for the sole purpose of eggs. It broke my heart to lose the turkeys. I was told the noise was a problem. If that's the case then why do I listen to all kinds of noise around me. Sometimes even in the early am. I was also told my neighbors complained. Not true, so many told me after they were gone that they missed the sound that reminded them of when they were young.

I also received an email concerning my rain barrel. Upon researching it there was no such ordinance restricting rain barrels in Indiana. Why so much control over us citizens?

What can I do to help change this?

I need clarification. do you mean state statute or city/county ordinance????? There are no state ordinances and no local statutes. You are mixing terms. No as far as I know there is no statues preventing rain barrels in Indiana. but local ordinances (city and county) may prevent them. also HOA rules may prevent them in areas that have HOAs..
 
The email came from the town of Mooresville but it stated that rain barrels were illegal in the STATE of Indiana. Since then I've seen many rain barrels used in Mooresville. I also use mine again and have not heard anything more about it. I could be confusing terms as you said but the email said the STATE restricted use of them and not the town of Mooresville. I have also seen chickens in back yards since I had to get rid of mine. Upon researching this I have come to one statement: The town board chose to restrict chickens but they are limited to so many at a time. I was not told that. I was told I had to get rid of them all. Period.
