advice on chicken roosts

I used 2x3 turned wide side up. I agree use whichever you want. Sometimes we think too much about what our chickens want or would prefer.

i use two 4 inch diameter(straight) oak logs i cut down behind the house. this is wide enough to let them keep their feet warm at night, and it also has good natural grip on the bark, which works well when a buncha chickens are arguing over who sleeps where in that last 20 mins of daylight.

I have been wrong ever since I got my chickens.I had always used the 2x4 and it was making sense as to what I was being told, but now I see it in a different light. You would think that it would be easier on a flat piece of wood.Guess I was wrong. Thanks for the information.Happy New Year

I use 2X4s wide side up and the upper edges rounded off. By using 2X4s, you can set it up so that they are easily removable for coop cleaning. I guess you could use tree branches and make them removable, But IMO, using cut lumber makes it a whole lot easier. See the pic below, those roost boards are easily popped out for cleaning, no screws, nails or clips to deal with. And, as already pointed out, keep the roosts higher than the nest boxes.

In my opinion there is not right or wrong, just the one you decide to use.

JackE, if you look back at my other post in this thread, you can see how I put then in so they are easy to remove. That will work with either tree limbs or boards. There are several other ways. People on this forum are pretty good at coming up with different ways that work.

Agree with the 2x4 crowd...keeps the feet warm, is more stable, doesn't require as much effort to "grip" while they sleep, and as the girls age, it's definitely easier for them. If you go with a branch, make sure it's at least big around and not some spindly little thing that is hard for them to balance on. But I am a 2x4 devotee and really think they are better than slippery poles or even branches (which become more slippery with use/over time).

You right.Kinda lost my head for a moment.I do like the 2x4's. They have worked great for me and as of now I have had no bad feet or legs. A lot of this is a need and a lot is what ever works for you and your area
