Hatch-Along - Setting eggs this weekend (Jan5/6) WHOS WITH ME!

Welcome! Glad you guys joined us. Lots of great stuff going on here. So what do you have hatching this fri?
Well, they've now hatched ( a bit early) and I have twenty Marans chicks. 9 are wheatons, and the other 11 are a mix of black, black copper, blue, blue copper, and cuckoo.

Sadly, we hatched out 9 others, but the brooder was too hot, and I lost 9. Note to self: ALWAYS HAVE A THERMOMETER in the brooder!

I have a hen that lays a weird egg color too.
I won first place at the egg show with a mauve egg from one of my cuckoo Marans.

She lays a mauve egg every few days. It's the oddest thing. I had a LOT of people ask me at the show what laid it

It's a very beautiful color, and the eggs are always really big.

I have never seen purple though. It sounds really cool!

Yes I know the feeling, it really is hard to believe that we are already halfway to chicks!

Very exciting. Tonight while turning and candling I went ahead and removed the three that looked like they weren't developing. Cracked them open, they were infertile it looked like, no blood and no veins just messy yolk. The other fifteen still look good I think. Some are getting way to dark to see anything though

But I hope that's a good thing. I also cracked and went for the sale from Ideal poultry and bought 20 Pekin Ducklings ... Will be our first time with ducks so it'll be interesting! They'll be shipped on the 23rd and will be getting here around the time my eggs go into lockdown.
The thing to know about ducks: one duck is as messy at ten chicks. They are cute, and fun, but oh so messy.

So sad, I think my 3 yo cooked the chicks :( I checked the temp at one point tonight and it took a minute to confirm my eyes weren't playing tricks on me, 117. She immediately took credit for it and burst into tears, followed by tears and yelling from the five yo. I don't think it was more than two hours, but so high :((

Yikes I'm so sorry

Has anyone had success in hatching with a temp spike that high before? Maybe there's still a chance? I honestly don't know :(

Oh no! I'm sorry! Three year olds can be so naughty sometimes. My three year old little boy is into everything right now too. I don't think they know better they just react and think later. It's just a shame for your five year old and the rest of the family. I feel for you guys.

What incubator are you using? I wonder if it's a still air there may be a chance some areas didn't get as hot as others?
