how often do i need to clean??

Here is a little video about the way I clean my coop. I clean once every 2-3 weeks, or as needed, but I think you may enjoy my easy clean-up method. Here is the link to the video:
Enjoy!

Does anyone use contractors sand under the pine shavings for litter? I just got my "final" purchase of hens (19 total) and want to make sure I keep the coop clean with Winter approaching. Right now, I'm using only pine shavings with some sand underneath. From what I'm reading, I feel that it is not deep enough.....thoughts? Thanks! I'm a "newby"....I have 11 Dominiques, 4 Buff Orpingtons and 4 Amerucanas.

To me it would just make cleanup difficult adding sand in the coop under shavings. I have a wood floor in my coop and use a thick layer of shavings. Thick enough that when I stomp down on the floor, there is plenty of cushion. Think of a mature Orpington hopping off the roost onto the floor in the morning. Heavy breeds shouldn't have high roosts (I keep roosts low at 2' or less off the floor). Quality shavings matter too since you don't want lots of splintered wood in the mix. This will prevent bumblefoot staph infections from occuring. Litter should be dry even in Winter and you want consistant ventilation in the coop.

I use sand, but outside in the run only. It keeps the top layer of soil well drained in Winter and makes removal of droppings during dry weather easy with a fine rake. Chickens will work the sand into the soil over time, and you can always add more as desired.
