I'm so confused... I hope someone can answer this.
This morning when I left for work there was ONE hatched chick, ONE empty egg, and a bunch of unhatched eggs under my hen. They are due to hatch between now and Saturday.
I came home to the nastiest smell of my life. I lifted the hen up to see if she pooped and found a rotten egg smashed under her AND a new chick.
????
Where did the shell from the chick this morning go??? Okay so maybe the hen ate it. BUT that would mean that this new chick came from this rotten egg???
There is definitely only one egg under her that's been broken open. The chick is covered in nasty rotten-ness (yes I cleaned her off and gave her back to the hen)... yes I got rid of the rotten egg and cleaned the box...
I'm just confused... Could the rotten mess have come from the same egg as this new chick? The only thing I can think is that maybe it was twins and the twin was rotten? The egg wasn't that large though.
Any ideas?
