Calcium deficiency?

Here's an update on the hen. She made it through the night, which I didn't think she was going to.
Yesterday I got her to eat about a teaspoon of baby food pears, calcium tablets, vitamin d and some antibiotics. She sat in my lap and ate it. Today, she seems to look a little bit better. I'm not going to say she looks normal by any stretch, but better than yesterday she seems more alert. I think if I can get some more antibiotics in her, she could pull through.

So this morning I made her a scrambled egg with peas, with a splash of vitamin d. Later I'll give her some baby food mixture to see if she'll eat it. I also put some save a chick in her water and now she's drinking more water than I've seen her drink in days.

Okay, well yesterday while she was eating the baby food, she was sitting in my lap and I noticed that her beak is sticking together? Like it seems like the top is long and curved down a little and the bottom part is sticking in the top and its hard for her to open her beak? I can hear a clicking noise when she is opening her beak and it didn't sound normal. Are chickens like other birds and their beaks need to be trimmed? I've never heard of such a thing, but I wonder if her top beak is too long or something and she's having a hard time because they're sticking together. It also looks like she's having to dunk her beak farther into her water bowl than normal, so I don't really know whats going on?!

She seems to be eating the eggs and drinking the save a chick in her water. She's still separated from everyone and none of the other chickens are showing any signs of anything.
And I still have no idea what is going on.

You can trim a chicken's beak, it just doesn't need to done that often. You do it just like anything else. You can use a pair of nail clippers even! Thats good she is a little better. Thanks for the update!

Well I think I'm going to go the whole nine yards and treat for worms and mites.
I know that mites can suck the life out of them, but I've never had an issue with mites. I've also never wormed them because I've never had a problem with worms. But I'm going to do all of it and see if it helps at all. On top of her antibiotics and special foods.
Hopefully I can bring her back from this! I've been going through everything in my head and we're going to go down different avenues now.

Well Good Luck! I hope she get's better. It's a good idea to worm her but keep in mind that it can sometimes be a tax on her immune system . Mine always look a little down after I worm them so I would be careful.

Well I hope worming doesn't kill her! Or if she's down then having whatever take over and that kill her. haha. That would be terrible.

I hate when they get sick like this! Why can't she just tell me whats going on?! LOL

hi, i'd love to know how she's doing. i have a hen with very similar symptoms, and i'm doing the same thing - calcium + worming. Only thing i'm not doing is antibiotics.

My hen pulled through with flying colors. Even laid an egg the other day.
It was touch and go for a few days, but then she started to come around and act more like herself.

What I did was, I made a pitcher of save a chick, mixed that with calcium tabs, a liquid vit D for infants, some B complex, some clavamox. I gave that to her everyday and gave her laying mash with some oyster shells mixed into it.
I also kept her confined in a small dog kennel for about 2 weeks with very limited out time. Then I started letting her out for a little while in the evenings, she started out slow with going to sleep while standing up and not moving too much, then I would put her back up. Slowly she started getting back to herself. I let her out and she would start to peck and scratch again, after not scratching for 3 weeks. Then in her hospital cage I noticed her scratching and purposely knocking her food dish over to peck at the crumbles, so I started letting her out for longer.
Her poop started looking better, she was eating bugs and stuff from the grass. It took her about a week to get back to 100% normal. Now she is doing fine, scratching and eating right.
I just had them NPIP tested and she didn't have any antibodies in her blood, so she doesn't have anything going on.

I think she really had a calcium deficiency because none of the other chickens showed any signs of the things that she had. No one had weird poop like she did, she was the only one. I am going to keep an eye on her though, because she DID lay that one egg and this happened weeks ago after she laid an egg. The egg a few weeks ago, took it all out of her.

I only added the antibiotics into her water because I didn't know if she had some kind of infection or some kind of reproductive thing. So I figured just a little shot of antibiotics would help fight that off. I don't know if the antibiotics did anything or if it was the vitamins and electrolytes doing all the work.

I also wormed her, I only did a half a dose for her because she was already compromised and I didn't want it to take it all out of her. Then I dusted her for mites, just in case.

Thats what I did, all in a week period and then the next week she was making good progress in getting better.
I hope you hen gets better Poonam!
