Someone please help me!!!! I was candling a day 14 egg and it dropped! The top (large end) cracked and there is blood, but the baby chick inside is still moving!! The internal membrane hasn't ruptured but the more than half of the top can be lifted off. Should I put it back in the bator in the egg turner?? I don't want to lose this chick if I can help it, but I thought for sure the drop killed it

I would put little piece of scotch tape over cracked egg shell part and not remove it till it is suppose to hatch. I have had babies hatch that egg got cracked accidently and I have had had them die. So it just gives them chance to live.

Okay, I put a small piece of tape on it and put it back in the bator in the turner. I'm SO devastated right now! I cannot believe I dropped it! I had it out to candle for day 14 and had just seen movement and everything looked perfect and now this!! Should I remove the tape on day 18 when I remove it from the turner or 21?

?? Hard to say. I have tried to remove tape from them and it pulls off shell. In end I just waited until it was due to hatch and candled it and when I saw the babies beak come through and was in air cell and peeping I removed tape then. I just felt that was safest time to do it.

thank you so much! That's what I'll do then. I really hope this little guy makes it!

since the crack is so large and there was a little blood coming out, will this contaminate the rest of my hatch? What are the chances that bacteria will get in and kill it?

It could, but only if it goes bad and explodes all over the others. If you can, keep it away from the others a bit, or on the outside edge/corner. It's mostly in danger of getting bacteria inside its own egg shell. That's what would end up killing the embryo.

BTW, some people use hot wax, dripped from a candle to close off the crack, it's just another method that might be more sterile. If the tape is holding, I'd leave it though. Hope he/she makes it!

That's what I was thinking too...about the bacteria getting in. I do have it in the corner. Yeah, I had read about the wax but I think the crack is too big. I can almost see inside. The tape is holding so I guess I'll leave it and wait until day 18 to stop turning and candle again. Thank you! I really hope it pulls through too. Breaks my heart.

I agree with all of the advice Wayne&Kim have given. Odds are, it'll be fine.

My friend had an egg out with a broody, and on day 19, another chicken laid a monster egg on top of it and shattered the egg. We felt absolutely positive it was dead, and when we went to peel the shell off to do an eggtopsy, it moved. So I ran home and grabbed my incubator and stuck the egg in there, because it was obviously waaaay too fragile to be around the other chickens. Here's a video we took right afterwards.

Amazingly enough, two days later, the chick hatched, perfectly healthy. We put her out under her mother and she is now 2-3 months old and doing fantastic.

Here she is at a couple days old with her sisters and mama.

So, odds are great that your egg will hatch and be just fine.
