We have a red star that is about 3.5 months old (as best I can remember the date we got her). Today she laid an "egg" with a soft shell. I'm remembering as a kiddo hearing my dad say that their first egg can be like that. Should we be concerned? She stood over the egg for a long time, very somber. Usually all our chickens are roaming around munching and scratching, so this was quite different behavior. I'm reading on here about getting them some oyster shells or grinding egg shells for them to munch, so I will do that also. I just feel like she's young?

I had a silver wyandotte lay a soft shelled egg as her first, but she was the only one. I offer my layers free choice crushed egg shells and haven't had this happen since.
Hopefully it was just a one shot thing

TOTALLY normal! Almost all my girls layer a soft one the first time....not to worry!

i have 3.5 month old pullets (6) 2 that have started to lay eggs this weekeach day they have layed one egg with nice hard shells. today there is a soft shelled egg in the pen not in the nest. i only have one egg in the nest from today so far. would it be normal for a young hen that has laid hard shelled eggs all week to suddenly lay a soft egg or could it be another hen has started to lay? i am concernced because i know it is dangerous for them to lay soft shell eggs. i have free calcium in the pen and feed a mixture of starter crumbles (because they are only 3 months old) and all flock pellets 22% protein. i am going to take the eggs and crush the shells to feed back to them in the food today. is there anything else i can do to help them off to a healthly start. i didn't expect them to start laying so young? i bought them as hatchlings on march 30th any input would be greatly appreciated.
